This Week In The Economy: Goodbye To The FOMC’s Forward Guidance

Welcome to a regular snapshot-review of U.S. and international economic news that aims to 1) provide a window into the challenges and decisions facing businesses today, 2) determine the direction of economic policy — such as the speed at which central banks decide to raise interest rates, and 3) assess what the impact will be for consumers.

New Fed Chair Kicks Off New Regime By Dropping Future Policy Guidance

The Federal Open Market Committee under new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh voted unanimously to leave interest rates unchanged, but there were other notable changes to the FOMC statement compared to the document released following the April meeting:

Major Removal of Forward Guidance

April contained language along the lines of:

  • Careful assessment of incoming data
  • Evolving outlook
  • Balance of risks
  • Extent and timing of additional policy adjustments
  • Willingness to adjust policy if risks emerge

Those paragraphs disappear entirely from the June FOMC statement. This is the single biggest communication change and marks a shift away from signaling future rate moves.

Operational Addition

The June FOM statement states: “The Committee reaffirmed its policy of maintaining ample reserves in the banking system.”

This language was absent from April.

Bottom Line

The June 2026 statement represents a notable change in communication strategy rather than in policy itself:

  • No change to the federal funds target range.
  • More positive characterization of economic growth and productivity.
  • Inflation remains the central concern, with greater emphasis on energy- and supply-driven pressures.
  • All forward guidance was removed, leaving the Committee less committed to signaling its next move and emphasizing a meeting-by-meeting approach.
