The Day My “Simple Portfolio” Humbled Me

I opened my laptop today with a very clear plan: build my portfolio website.

Nothing too crazy. Just something clean, aesthetic, a little bit of animation, maybe a soft color palette that feels like me. In my head, it was already done. I could literally picture how it would look scrolling on screen.

And then I actually started.

The first hour went into setting things up. Fine. Normal. I felt productive. Then I moved to designing the first section… and that’s where everything started falling apart.

Nothing looked the way I imagined.

The spacing felt off. The colors didn’t match what I had in mind. The font that looked perfect yesterday suddenly looked completely wrong. I changed it. Then changed it again. Then went back to the first one.

At some point, I wasn’t even building anymore. I was just staring at the screen, moving things by a few pixels like it would magically fix everything.

It didn’t.

Then came the bugs. The kind that make you question your entire existence.

Why is this div not centering? Why is this animation lagging? Why did everything break when I changed one small thing?

I checked the code again and again, convinced I was missing something obvious. And maybe I was. Or maybe this is just what building something from scratch actually feels like.

There was a moment where I just leaned back and thought, “Am I even good at this?”

Not in a dramatic way. Just… honestly.

Because when you see other people’s portfolios, they look effortless. Smooth. Clean. Like they knew exactly what they were doing from the start.

But sitting there today, it didn’t feel like that at all.

It felt messy. Slow. Uncertain.

But I didn’t stop.

Not because everything suddenly clicked, but because I lowered the bar. I stopped trying to make it perfect and just tried to make it exist.

One section. Then another. Fix one issue. Ignore the next for now. Move forward anyway.

And somewhere in between all that, something shifted.

The page started to take shape. Not perfectly. Not even close. But enough to feel real.

That’s when it hit me.

This is the part no one talks about.

Not the final portfolio. Not the aesthetic screenshots. But this — the constant back and forth, the tiny adjustments, the quiet frustration, the small wins that no one sees.

By the end of the day, my website wasn’t finished.

It’s still rough. Still incomplete. Still far from what I imagined this morning.

But it exists.

And weirdly, that feels bigger than finishing it.

Because now I know something I didn’t before today.

Building something isn’t about getting it right the first time.

It’s about staying when it’s not going right at all.
