Why Do Some Memories Stay Forever While Others Fade??

Memory is the psychological and neural process of encoding, storing, retaining, and retrieving information, experiences, and skills. It’s a complex definition right? Let me explain in simpler term; memory is anything that’s stored in your mind. It could be someone, something, a place, anything that has happened to you in your life. Memory is not a perfect recording of our lives, instead it is a dynamic process shaped by biology, emotion, and context.

While some memories fade away quickly, certain memories remain vivid for decades. The main reason for these memories that never fade away is emotions. Emotions play a vital role in memory retention. For example, you still remember the day when you were the happiest the most it could be your birthday party, a school trip, your graduation day. It could also be your saddest day ever, like the day your beloved one died, or even your most embarrassed day. These memories that have ecstatic emotions tied to them last forever. Some memories also stay ever green because of their repetition. Like if you tell one of your life experience to a lot of people then that event/experience gets printed in your mind and you remember that memory as if it happened yesterday. Also some events that made you achieve something significant in your life also stay with you forever like if you moved to a bigger city in search of bigger opportunities and you eventually end up getting a great job then you’ll remember that city for the rest of your life. These are the memories that are imprinted in your mind and you remember them in your mind.

But there are some memories that you remember when you see physical things like let’s suppose your school’s uniform was white shirt and black pant, now whenever you’ll see some school going boy wearing white shirt and a black pant even though he’s not from your school then you’ll remember your school because your school’s uniform was also the same. Now you’ll remember everything about your school, you’ll remember your school days, your school friends, teachers, games that you used to play. Some memories are also tied to names too, like if you had someone who had a very unique name then you’ll remember that person for the rest of you life because of an emotion of uniqueness is attached to that person. It could also be a common name too, like let’s suppose someone’s name is Mike, it’s a common name but if this name is your school mate’s name with whom you’d spent your childhood with but now you aren’t in touch with him for over a decade will come to your mind and you’ll remember every little memory of the time that you’d spent with him in school. The reason is because there is an emotion of nostalgia attached tot his person, as you have spend a quality time with this person in your school time.

Not all the memories stay forever some fade away like the sunset. The memories that fade away are the ones that have no emotional depth attached to them. It could be the names of of all your teachers that you’ve had from school till graduation. You’ll remember only those who had some emotions attached to them. It could either be the teachers that have treated you the best or those who have treated you the worst. You’ll only remember them but the rest you’ll forget, and forgetting most of the memories is completely normal because you have a limited memory, not all the memories can be stored in your brain. But some memories do get stored in your cache memory like the memories that you don’t remember daily but you remember them for one time only. Like it could be someone who you’d last seen a decade ago and you had probably forgotten about that person because you didn’t catch up with that person, but then suddenly on a random day you see that person across the street and upon seeing him your brain loads all the data stored in cache memory and then you remember that person and now all the memories of that person are activated in your brain even though that person never came to your mind all that time.

In short, I can say that some memories stay forever because they are emotionally charged, personally significant, or frequently revisited. These factors ensure that certain moments become woven into the fabric of our identity, shaping who we are long after the events themselves have passed. I hope that you have your happy memories as the ones that you still remember today and smile at them with peace and tranquility. Always stay blessed and keep on smiling.
