If you look for Silicon Valley on the map, you’ll not find it. It’s not an official city, district or state. So what exactly is this region that’s so lovingly called that?

Let’s start with California. It’s a massive state on the west coast of the US (meaning the side of the country that touches the Pacific Ocean). It’s home to famous cities like Los Angeles, where you’ll find Hollywood, and San Francisco, known for the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. But our story isn’t about either of those.

Instead, we need to zoom in on the region around the San Francisco Bay, often just called the Bay Area. And more specifically, the southern part of the Bay Area. That’s what people mean when they say “Silicon Valley”.

Silicon Valley is a cluster of cities, each home to some of the world’s biggest tech giants. This includes San Jose (Adobe, Cisco, eBay), Mountain View (Google), Palo Alto (HP, Stanford University), Cupertino (Apple), Menlo Park (Meta), and Sunnyvale (Yahoo).
