“Why do you always go to her for advice?” Joy questioned Ana, her best friend, as they sat enjoying their Turmeric Latte.
“She is never wrong,” Ana recalls after taking a long sip of her Latte, her mind lingering on several past incidents in which her grandmother had given her advice she hadn’t taken.
“No one is right all of the time,” Joy’s anger said, recalling several times she had lost money and other things because Ana had followed her grandmother’s advice and didn’t go along with many of her suggestions. Joy’s anger was really at herself for not following Ana’s advice.
“She doesn’t give me advice all of the time,” Ana informs her.
“So that means she is wrong sometimes?” Joy pressed.
Ana turned to her, pushing away her regrets, then said, “My grandmother isn’t the only one whose advice I followed.”
“You mean many of your decisions aren’t really your own?” Joy asked, her latte in the air as her elbow rested on the table, staring at Ana.
Ana giggled a little after swallowing another sip of her Golden Latte, then shared, “I know many people whose lives are their word.”
“Ah,” Joy asked, staring at her in confusion.
“I was raised to check the messenger before taking their life message,” Ana explained.
“Damn,” Joy said. “So that’s why you never take any of my advice.”
“You made lots of mistakes which you don’t learn from, so I can’t take any of your advice, because you keep repeating all of your mistakes,” Ana reflects on the many incidents, giving her best friend a sideways look.
Joy stared at her, furled and unfurled her brows, then asked, “How is someone’s life their word?”
Ana stared at her with a serious expression, then elaborated, “The people I listen to have lived their advice. They don’t have to say the word, because they are already living it. They don’t have to give us advice because their lives and how they live speak for them.”
“So, it’s like an eighty-year-old that looks sixty telling us how to stay strong, healthy, and fit,” she said, pouring from her subconscious.
Ana’s silence pulled her head towards her, and she said, “What?”
“Where did that come from?” Ana demanded.
“Or someone on death row telling us how to avoid prison,” Joy went on.
Glaring at Ana’s popped eyes and mouth agape, Joy smiled, then defended, “I am not stupid.”
“I know,” Ana agreed, eyeing her weirdly, “The point I am trying to make is that many times words alone can’t get the job done.”
“So, it’s how your grandmother and others live that increases the value of their words, so that more people will listen to them?” Joy explained from her understanding.
“Damn girl, that golden latte is clearing the inflammation from your brain,” Ana said, giggling. “You need to drink this more often.”
“Very funny,” Joy agreed, smiling.
Ana reached over and squeezed her right hand, saying, “Many times, how we live shows on our physical appearance. It’s in our actions, choices, decisions, and intentions. Aware people can see it. When they can, they don’t need or use your words.”
“They use your life as your words?” Joy said, squeezing back her hand.
“Damn girl!” Ana cried out, grabbing her hand. “More golden latte for you.”
Joy grinned, then informed, “After today, I will listen to everything you say, because so far, you haven’t been wrong yet.”
“I will be wrong, because that’s how we will learn,” Ana said, pulling away.
“And I am ready to learn,” Joy stated with a big smile.
Being wrong is how many aware and sensible humans learn. Being incorrect is a lesson for me. I must be wrong first to learn, respect, appreciate, know, and value the right things.
Never afraid of being wrong, it’s packed with the right lessons. — Annelise Lords
