Yellow Buses and Blue Dreams: A Love Letter to Lagos

Hi,It’s me again (You would probably need to read my introduction to know who I am If you didn’t know already). To the casual observer, the Danfo is a loud, yellow pollutant — a mechanical bruise on the skin of Lagos. But to a writer, it is something else entirely. It is a mobile anthology. It is a four-wheeled theatre where the scripts are unwritten, the actors are unpaid, and the drama is as raw as the diesel fumes trailing behind us.

Every morning, I climb into this yellow shell, my bag pressed against my chest like a shield. I am not just a commuter; I am a curator of the “Blue Dreams” that float inside this humid cabin.

The Yellow Manuscript

The bus itself is a text I’ve spent years learning to read. The scratched-out slogans on the back bumper — No King as God, The Young Shall Grow, Suffer Head No Be Forever — are the prologues to ten thousand different lives. The yellow paint, chipped and sun-bleached, is the parchment.

I take my seat, usually “four-four” on the middle bench, wedged between a woman whose perfume smells like Sunday morning and a man whose sigh sounds like a lifetime of Mondays. This is where the world happens. In a private car, you are a ghost in a bubble. In a Danfo, you are a character in a crowded room.

Observing the Blue Dreams

I watch them from the corner of my eye, my pen hovering over the page.

There is the girl in the “Blue Dream.” She’s wearing a crisp white shirt, her eyes fixed on a point three miles past the horizon. I imagine her as my protagonist. In my mind, she’s an architect dreaming of a Lagos built of glass and steel, a city that doesn’t leak when it rains. Her silence is a heavy chapter I haven’t finished writing yet.

Beside her, a boy is tapping out a rhythm on his knees. He’s the comic relief or perhaps the tragic hero. His headphones are his fortress. I see his lips move — is it a prayer or a rap verse? In this yellow bus, both are equally likely. Both are fuels for the same fire.

The Dialogue of the Streets

As a writer, I live for the dialogue. The conductor is the narrator, his voice a gravelly baritone that keeps the plot moving. “Yaba! Obalende! Wole pelu change e! (Enter with your change!)” It’s a rhythmic hook, a recurring motif in the symphony of the commute.

Then there are the “bus-stop philosophers” — the women and men who turn a 100-Naira fare dispute into a three-act play about the state of the economy, the corruption of the heart, and the price of yams in the market. I record their metaphors in my head. I steal their cadences. They don’t know it, but they are the best ghostwriters I’ve ever had.

The Final Chapter

We complain about the heat, the “lapping,” and the drivers who navigate as if they’ve made a pact with the gods of chaos. But without the Danfo, my ink would run dry.

This yellow bus is the pulse of the city. It carries the weight of a million stories that will never be published, but are lived with every gear shift. It is the vessel of our collective “Blue Dreams” — the quiet hope that today’s hustle will lead to tomorrow’s rest.

When I finally alight and step onto the dusty pavement, I am heavier than when I boarded. Not from the commute, but from the stories I’ve collected. I walk away with a yellow bus-sized heart, ready to turn these blue dreams into black ink.

The best stories in Lagos aren’t found in the bookstores; they are found on the “third row from the back” during rush hour at Third Mainland Bridge.

If you were a character in my next chapter, what would you be holding in your lap on the Danfo?
