The Chemical Plant Use Case
Chemical processing is the natural home of nickel alloy pipe fittings. The combination of aggressive chemistry, mixed-phase flows, elevated temperatures, and continuous service for years between turnarounds creates exactly the conditions where stainless steel struggles and nickel alloys excel.
Sulfuric Acid Service
Concentrated sulfuric acid above about 80% can be handled in carbon steel at moderate temperatures. Dilute sulfuric, or concentrated acid at elevated temperatures, requires Alloy 20, Hastelloy B-2, or specialty alloys. The right choice depends on concentration, temperature, and the presence of contaminants — copper sulfate, for example, dramatically shifts the optimal alloy.
Chlor-Alkali and Caustic Service
Caustic concentration is one of the few large-scale industrial processes where Monel 400 is the default specification. The nickel-copper chemistry resists both the caustic and the trace chlorides that often accompany it. In strong caustic at very high temperatures, Inconel 600 and Inconel 625 take over.
Pulp and Paper Bleaching
Chlorine dioxide and chlorine bleaching environments require Hastelloy C-276 or higher. The combination of oxidizing chemistry, chlorides, and elevated temperature destroys 316L stainless within months in the bleach plant. C-276’s molybdenum-rich chemistry is what makes the difference.
Flue Gas Desulfurization
FGD scrubbers handle wet, low-pH, chloride-rich streams at moderate temperatures — a textbook case for Hastelloy C-22 or C-276. Lining or constructing the scrubber, ducting, and associated piping in nickel alloy is what allows these systems to run reliably for decades.
Hydrogen and Ammonia Service
Hydrogen service at moderate temperatures is often handled with stainless steel or low-alloy steel. At elevated temperatures, the high-temperature hydrogen attack risk pushes selection to chrome-moly or nickel alloys. Ammonia service is similar — Monel and Inconel are common upgrades when stainless cannot handle the combination.
A Selection Discipline
Identify the corroding species. Identify the temperature and concentration ranges across the operating envelope including upset conditions. Identify any second species (chlorides in a caustic stream, oxygen ingress in a reducing service) that shift the answer. Then specify the alloy. A manufacturer who supplies the full nickel alloy family can usually shorten this exercise from weeks to days.
