The Amazon Product Research Method That Found Me a $10K/Month Niche

How I used Helium 10’s Black Box and Cerebro to find a low-competition product in under a week — and what I wish I’d known before I started.

Most people who fail on Amazon fail before they ever ship a product.

They pick a niche based on gut feeling. They copy what’s already popular. They ignore the data sitting right in front of them — and then wonder why their listing gets buried under 400 competitors with 3,000 reviews each.

I almost made the same mistake.

Eight months ago I started researching Amazon FBA seriously. I’d watched the YouTube videos. I understood the concept. But every time I started looking for products manually — scrolling through Amazon categories, guessing at search volumes — I hit a wall. There was no way to know if a niche was actually good, or if I was just excited about it.

Then I started using Helium 10. Specifically, two features: Black Box and Cerebro.

Within one week, I had found a product in a niche generating consistent monthly revenue with low review counts among the top sellers — meaning a new competitor (me) had a real shot at ranking.

Here’s the exact method.

What Is Helium 10?

Helium 10 is a software suite built specifically for Amazon sellers. It pulls real data from Amazon’s marketplace — search volumes, revenue estimates, competitor keyword rankings, listing quality scores — and organizes it into tools you can actually use.

It has over 30 tools inside one dashboard. For product research, the two that matter most are:

  • Black Box — find products matching specific criteria (revenue, reviews, price, category)
  • Cerebro — reverse-engineer a competitor’s entire keyword strategy using their ASIN

There’s a free plan that gives you limited searches per day, and paid plans starting around $39/month. I started on the free tier to validate the tool before paying anything.

Step 1: Black Box — Finding the Right Product Category

Black Box is essentially a database of Amazon products with filters. You tell it what you’re looking for, and it surfaces products that match.

Here are the filter settings I used for my search:

I ran this search and got back hundreds of results.

But here’s what most tutorials don’t tell you: don’t pick the first product that looks good. Look for patterns. Are multiple products in the same subcategory showing up? That’s a signal the subcategory has genuine, spread-out demand — not just one viral product inflating the numbers.

I found a subcategory within Home & Kitchen where 8 to 12 products were all generating between $6,000 and $22,000 per month, most of them with under 150 reviews, and price points clustering around $28–$38.

That’s what a real opportunity looks like.

Step 2: Cerebro — Stealing the Keyword Map

Once I had a promising product, I took the ASIN of the top 3 sellers in that subcategory and ran them through Cerebro.

Cerebro does one thing brilliantly: it shows you every keyword a product is ranking for on Amazon, along with search volume, rank position, and how many competitors are also ranking for that same keyword.

What I was looking for:

High search volume keywords where the top-ranking products have relatively few reviews. This is the gap. If 1,000 people search a keyword every month and the #1 result has only 80 reviews, that’s a keyword I can rank for with time and a solid launch strategy.

From my three ASINs, Cerebro surfaced 340+ keywords. I exported the list and filtered it down to keywords with:

  • Monthly search volume above 1,000
  • Fewer than 3 competing products with 500+ reviews in the top 10

I ended up with 22 “winnable” keywords. These became the foundation of my listing — title, bullet points, backend search terms — all written around these exact phrases using another Helium 10 tool called Scribbles.

Step 3: Validating Demand Over Time (Not Just a Snapshot)

One thing beginners miss: a product can look great in a single snapshot but be dying.

Helium 10’s Trend data shows you the search volume history for a keyword over 12 to 24 months. I checked every one of my 22 target keywords for trend direction.

What I wanted to see: flat or slowly growing volume. Steady demand means predictable revenue.

What I avoided: sharp spikes (likely seasonal or viral) and declining curves (fading interest).

Three of my 22 keywords showed strong, steady upward trends. I built my entire launch strategy around those three — treating the other 19 as secondary keywords to rank for over time.

The Result

I placed my first order with a supplier I found via Alibaba (validated with Helium 10’s supplier database) in month two. I launched on Amazon in month four.

By month six: $8,200 in revenue. By month eight: $11,400 in revenue.

Not life-changing numbers. But this is one product, sourced with a $2,200 initial investment, found using a tool that cost me $39/month to use.

The math works.

What Helium 10 Can’t Do

I want to be honest here, because too many reviews oversell software.

Helium 10 gives you data. It doesn’t give you judgment.

It can show you a product with low reviews and high revenue — it can’t tell you whether you can actually source that product well, price it competitively, and execute a launch. There are still real skills involved: supplier negotiation, listing copywriting, PPC campaign management, customer service.

The tool removes the guesswork from the research phase. Everything after that is still on you.

Also: the free plan is genuinely limited. You get a handful of Black Box searches and Cerebro lookups per day. It’s enough to validate whether the tool is right for you, but if you’re doing serious research, you’ll want a paid plan.

Who Should Use Helium 10

You should try Helium 10 if:

  • You’re researching Amazon FBA and want data-backed product selection
  • You’re already selling and want to find new product lines
  • You want to understand what keywords your competitors are ranking for
  • You’re doing wholesale or arbitrage and need to validate margins quickly

You probably don’t need it if:

  • You’re not selling on Amazon at all
  • You’re just starting to research whether Amazon FBA is right for you (watch YouTube first, then come back to tools)

Getting Started

Helium 10 has a free account with no credit card required. The free tier gives you limited searches across most tools — enough to run through the method I described above once or twice and see how it works.

If you decide to go paid, there’s a discount available for new accounts. I’ve linked it below — it’s an affiliate link, meaning I earn a small commission if you upgrade. That said, I used this tool before I ever thought about writing this article, so the recommendation is genuine.

Quick Reference: The Method

For those who want the condensed version:

  1. Open Black Box → set revenue ($5K–$30K), reviews (max 200), price ($20–$65)
  2. Look for subcategories with multiple products matching — not just one outlier
  3. Take the top 3 ASINs and run them through Cerebro
  4. Filter for keywords: 1,000+ monthly searches, top-10 dominated by low-review listings
  5. Check Trend data on your shortlist — flat or growing only
  6. Build your listing around your top 3–5 “winnable” keywords using Scribbles
  7. Use Helium 10’s supplier database to shortlist manufacturers

That’s the full loop. It took me about 6 hours spread across 3 days.

The biggest mistake you can make on Amazon is launching the wrong product. This method doesn’t guarantee success — but it dramatically improves the odds you’re starting in the right place.
