Buick Electra Zhijing concept proposes a different order: first the life scenarios inside, then the space, interfaces, autonomous platform and chassis.
This is not just a beautiful show car. It is a system of solutions showing what the automobile after the automobile could become.
It forces us to rethink the whole picture: perhaps the future of the car begins not with the engine, not with the steering wheel and not even with the screen, but with the question of how a person wants to spend time in motion.
1. The Fifth Element of Automotive Harmony: Life Scenarios Inside
In the old automotive logic, there were four main elements: body, engine, chassis and cabin.
Body defined form. Engine defined character. Chassis defined road behavior. Cabin defined comfort.
But Buick Electra Zhijing adds a fifth element.
And it is not a screen, not 64-color ambient lighting and not artificial intelligence.
The fifth element of the automobile of the future is the life scenario inside the space defined by the body.
What does a person do in a car when driving is no longer necessary? Work? Rest? Talk? Isolate from the city? Use the journey as a pause between meetings, as a private room, as a recovery capsule?
In the traditional automobile, these scenarios are secondary. They come after the steering wheel, after the pedals, after the instrument panel, after the driver’s seating position.
In Electra Zhijing, the life scenario inside is no longer an addition to the cabin. It becomes the starting point of the entire architecture.

2. Screens Instead of Windows: The Interior as a Managed Environment
In a conventional car, the window is the boundary between the cabin and the outside world.
In an autonomous car, the view beyond the window becomes part of the user experience.
A window can become an instrument panel, a media surface, a privacy filter or transparent glass. Panoramic surfaces and internal screens can not only show the road, but turn the cabin into a managed environment: a home lounge, a work space, a meditation capsule, a digital landscape or a private office.
This is no longer just “a large screen in the cabin”. Transparent OLED panels, smart glass and projection displays allow the window to work in two modes: to remain glass through which the outside world is visible, or to become an interface that displays data, navigation, content and visual scenarios.
The radical shift is not in the size of the screen, but in the change of its role: the window stops being a passive boundary between the person and the surrounding world.

Chinese motifs in Electra Zhijing do not look like a decorative sticker placed on top of global design. The fan, the screen, soft privacy, light patterns and flowing lines work not as ornament, but as spatial logic.
The main element here is the central fan-shaped modules with a rotating base. They can serve as armrests, unfold into separate small tables, combine into a shared tabletop for face-to-face conversation, or turn into a semi-private partition dividing the space.
In other words, decorative images are implemented through the kinematics of a transformable interior: the fan motif becomes a working tool for organizing the cabin.
This is not just a beautiful detail. It is cultural code turned into function.
In the premium car of the future, luxury is measured not only by materials, power or range. It is measured by how precisely the space can adapt to the situation: business meeting, family trip, rest, privacy, waiting, recovery.

4. Body as Interface: The Car Communicates with Its Environment
The front of Buick Electra Zhijing no longer tries to imitate the classic automotive “face”. There is no familiar radiator grille, no fake aggression and no old language of sportiness.
Instead, the body becomes an interface.
The front of the concept is a “light shield”: a transparent surface with laser engraving, a feather-like pattern and “breathing” graphics. Behind it is an AI projection screen that can launch visual interaction when a person approaches.
Translucent surfaces, embedded sensors and dynamic graphics create a new language of communication.
If there is no human behind the wheel, the vehicle must show its state to the outside world: autonomous mode, contact with a pedestrian, readiness to yield, start of motion or change of scenario.
The future car must not only perceive the environment, but also communicate with it. And it is better if it does so not as an LED billboard on wheels, but as a calm, understandable and aesthetically coherent object.

And this is no longer just a Buick fantasy, but a real trend beginning to appear in production vehicles.
For now, it is not yet a full “language of the autonomous automobile”, but rather the first letters of the alphabet: light strips, interactive headlights, road projections, rear displays and pixel panels. The kind of thing marketing calls “emotional interaction”.
IM Motors already uses external communication through Interactive Signal Communication / ISC taillights, which can display messages to a vehicle behind.
ZEEKR STARGATE integrated smart light curtain is no longer simply DRL and not just “beautiful lights”, but almost a pixel screen in the front of the car: a 90-inch light panel with 1,711 LED elements, a 30 fps refresh rate and brightness of up to 10,000 nits, capable of writing messages, showing images and communicating with the outside world.
Drive.ai was an early but important example of an autonomous shuttle using external panels/screens with messages such as “Waiting for You”, so that pedestrians could understand the vehicle’s intentions.
This is exactly the precursor of external HMI: when there is no driver, the machine has to replace the nod, the glance and the hand gesture.

5. Chassis Without Familiar Mechanics: Drive-by-Wire and New Maneuverability
If the automobile stops being a machine for the driver, the chassis is no longer obliged to follow the old mechanical logic.
Electra Zhijing points toward a direction where steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, throttle-by-wire and four independent electric motors change the very idea of trajectory control. In this architecture, the trajectory is set not by the steering angle of the wheels, but by the difference in traction between the left and right sides: it creates yaw moment and guides the vehicle along the curve.

Here, the mechanical link between steering wheel and wheels disappears: four motor-wheels point toward the possibility of abandoning the steering mechanism altogether. If the wheels no longer need to turn, the wheel arches can become narrower, freeing more space for the cabin.
Such a compact and efficient wheel-module design is not needed only for spectacular demonstrations such as an almost stationary tank turn. There is a more important meaning behind it: in dense cities of the future, maneuverability may become as much a part of the premium experience as power, ride smoothness or silence.
6. Autonomy as Architecture: L5 Changes Packaging
Many concept cars have promised autonomy. But often it looked like an ordinary car with autopilot added: the steering wheel remained, the pedals remained, the driver’s seat remained, and somewhere in the presentation the phrase “fully autonomous” appeared.
Electra Zhijing is interesting for another reason. It is conceived from the start as a space where manual control is no longer the mandatory point of reference. This changes everything: seating, seat orientation, cabin shape, interfaces, visibility, usage scenarios and even the emotional perception of the journey.
Of course, real L5 autonomy is more complicated than a beautiful exhibition formula. There are regulation, liability, weather, maps, infrastructure, safety and other dull things with which reality usually ruins presentations.
But conceptually, the shift is obvious: if the driver is no longer the center of the architecture, the automobile must be designed differently from the very beginning.

7. Energy Without Rituals: Solid-State Battery and Cable-Free Charging
For such a machine, the battery is not simply a source of range.
It defines floor height, packaging freedom, safety, mass, autonomous operation of all systems and the possibility of creating inside not just a cabin, but a complete mobile space.
Buick presents the solid-state battery as part of the future architecture. This matters not only because of potential energy density or safety. It matters because energy becomes part of packaging freedom.
And if the automobile of the future really turns into an autonomous capsule, the logical next step is the rejection of the familiar charging ritual: open the flap, take out the cable, plug in the connector, wait.
The future of such architecture leads to wireless charging or automated battery replacement. Not to an owner standing next to an autonomous capsule with a cable in hand.

The Afterword: Mercedes Was a Beautiful Fairy Tale. Buick Shows a New Reality
The comparison with the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR suggests itself. AVTR was spectacular, organic, expensive and visually unforgettable. It was inspired by the world of Avatar, the planet Pandora, bioluminescence and the idea of symbiosis between human, machine and nature.

But in retrospect, Vision AVTR is still perceived primarily as a beautiful fairy tale. Very expensive, very spectacular, very “Mercedes” fantasy. Concept myth. Concept mood. Concept decoration.
Buick Electra Zhijing is different.

It is theatrical too. It is beautiful too. It plays with emotions too. But behind the show, there is concrete industrial logic: life scenarios inside, autonomous architecture without the driver as the center, a transformable lounge, body-as-interface, sensors embedded in form, drive-by-wire, four independent motors, a solid-state battery and cable-free charging.
Mercedes Vision AVTR showed a beautiful dream of symbiosis. Buick Electra Zhijing shows the building blocks the automotive industry may use to shape a new reality.
This concept car is important as a map of possible automotive architecture. It shows that the future automobile may stop being an automobile in the familiar sense.
And perhaps it will begin not with the engine, not with the steering wheel and not with the screen, but with a simple question: how does a person want to spend time in motion?
