Beyond the Streets & Adidas’ Cyclone Sweatshirt

I recently explored the “Beyond the Streets” exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery — supported by Adidas Originals. This exhibition showcased the works of over 100 international mural artists, many of whom have their roots in graffiti and street art and transitioned from their graffiti origins to develop highly disciplined studio practices.

Spanning three floors, the exhibition delved into the intrinsic human need for public self-expression. It was curated and founded by graffiti-historian Roger Gastman, who presented not only the remarkable art pieces but also highlighted the significant cultural figures who drew inspiration from this art scene. Moreover, the exhibition showcased various products that were inspired by this art movement (such as my beloved Teenie — Adidas Superstars!).

From the beginning to the end (marked by the Saatchi gift shop), this exhibition felt more like a space to hang out and make friends. Probably because I booked a Saatchi Lates ticket — meaning I went there around 7 pm. A DJ was blasting a mix of hip-hop and electro, an increasing number of people were dancing on a small dance floor, and there was, of course, a bar giving out drinks.

Adidas Cyclone Crewneck & HIP HOP Culture

During my visit, I came across the Adidas Cyclone crewneck (view below), which I had previously seen on A$ap Rocky during a few public appearances. I finally understood why this sweatshirt holds such meaning within the realms of hip-hop history. In the last few years, this sweatshirt with the back number 948 has gained exposure among street fashion enthusiasts.

Adidas & its Cyclone sweatshirt have played a significant role in key moments of Hip Hop culture, like when the iconic NYC Hip Hop style made its way to Britain, subsequently becoming one of its cultural symbols. The first introduction of Hip Hop in England took place when DJ Cheese (of Word of Mouth), was played on English television. He performed while sporting the Cyclone sweatshirt, reports Claudia Gold, who was part of the research & curation team for the exhibition. She’s also an artist and fashion designer at her own brand CLAW. The fusion of Adidas with the emerging hip-hop scene exemplifies the brand’s deep connection and influence within the culture.

According to some comments I found on various Instagram vintage sites, this Adidas Cyclone crewneck was actually part of the official apparel of the US Cycling Team in 1986. In addition to the crewneck, there is also a Duffle bag, Training Pants and a few other items.
