Monaco GP is boring

The Monaco Grand Prix has been a staple race in the Formula one calendar, making it’s debut in 1950. Thus, making it 76 years old (as of 2026). Monaco has only ever been excluded 4 times in the entirety of it’s inception. 1951–54, Automobile Club de Monaco struggled to fund the event, therefore it’s absence in the calendar.

In the younger years of the Monaco Grand Prix, it was considered a very excitable race. Cars were small enough to go wheel-to-wheel in Loews Hairpin (which is impossible in today’s era of racing). In the 1950s, F1 cars were about 1.5m wide and 500kg. This allowed overtakes without a certain hit the barrier moment. In the modern era, cars are about 900kg and 2m wide. When reaching the hairpin, whoever is first gets the honour of leading the 21 car conga line to The Nouvelle Chicane.

Formula one is renowned for it’s electric atmosphere and fast racing. Watching Monaco Grand Prix is like watching The Antique Car “Slow Race” and pretending it’s exciting. Fans who crave adrenaline-fueled racing don’t go to watch Monaco and if they did, they’ll probably regret it.

The atmosphere in Monaco isn’t exactly welcoming. It is rich people milling around, taking photos then leaving. The fanzone is notoriously small and items are notoriously expensive. Going to the Monaco race is like taking a mortage loan out. Possibly 2. If the race is boring, people in attendance are yawning, things expensive — what is there actually to do? You go for bragging rights, and to experience the tax bracket most of us are not in.

Will Monaco ever be taken off?

In my opinion, no. It’ll create too much of an uproar and hassle. Formula one is based around money, and Monaco brings a lot of it. However, if there were to be a boycott, possibly the FIA would consider changes.

The contract ends in 2035, maybe then there will be changes.
