What Makes the Human Mind Dream the Impossible?
Hello, and welcome back to another episode of My Mind’s Thoughts.
I was reading a fictional book the other day when a question suddenly appeared in my mind.
What makes the human brain imagine things that don’t yet exist?
Not dreams we see while sleeping.
The kind of ideas that seem impossible when they’re born.
Think about it.
One day, a woman is sitting on a delayed train, and an idea about a boy with a lightning-shaped scar appears in her imagination. Years later, the world knows him as Harry Potter.
One day, a young boy growing up in a small town dreams of building rockets. That boy later becomes Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, remembered as the Missile Man of India.
Thomas Edison failed hundreds — perhaps thousands — of times before creating a practical electric light. Most people would have stopped long before then.
Dashrath Manjhi was told he was wasting his life when he decided to carve a path through a mountain using only simple tools. Yet years later, the mountain stood there with a road through it.
None of these people could prove, on day one, that they would succeed.
To everyone else, their ideas probably sounded unrealistic.
Maybe even impossible.
And that’s what fascinates me.
How does the same brain that worries about tomorrow also imagine a future that doesn’t exist yet?
Where does that confidence come from?
Or maybe confidence isn’t the right word.
Maybe it’s conviction.
Because the world usually doesn’t applaud impossible ideas in the beginning.
It questions them.
It laughs at them.
Sometimes it even calls them foolish.
But something interesting happens.
When someone keeps showing up, day after day, year after year, people eventually stop arguing with them.
They simply say,
“That’s just who they are.”
And sometimes…
Years later…
The impossible becomes ordinary.
I’m not trying to turn this into a motivational speech.
I’m simply amazed by the human mind.
Every day, millions of thoughts pass through our heads.
Most disappear within seconds.
Some become dreams.
A few become goals.
And an incredibly small number become ideas that change history.
What decides the difference?
Why does one thought disappear while another becomes a life’s work?
Maybe we’ll never know.
But I think that’s one of the most beautiful mysteries of being human.
Our brain is finite.
It weighs around one and a half kilograms.
Yet somehow, inside that small organ, entire worlds are imagined before they ever exist.
And perhaps every invention, every novel, every painting, every scientific discovery, and every great achievement began as a single thought that no one else could see.
What do you think?
Where do impossible ideas come from?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
