Chemie Chemical Partners with Jiangsu Jonnyma to Drive Technological Innovation in Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber

Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber (UHMWPEF) is currently the fiber with the highest specific strength and specific modulus in the world. It is a special functional fiber made from polyethylene with a molecular weight between 1 million and 5 million. Also known as high-strength, high-modulus polyethylene fiber, UHMWPEF exhibits exceptional properties that make it advantageous in high-performance fiber markets, including applications ranging from offshore oil rig mooring ropes to high-performance lightweight composite materials. It plays a crucial role in modern warfare, aerospace, and maritime defense equipment.

UHMWPEF fibers are known for their excellent impact resistance and energy absorption, making them ideal for military applications such as protective clothing, helmets, and ballistic materials. For example, they are used in the armor plates of helicopters, tanks, and ships, radar protection shells, missile casings, bulletproof vests, stab-resistant clothing, and shields. The application of UHMWPEF in bulletproof vests is particularly noteworthy, as it offers superior protection compared to aramid fibers and has become the dominant fiber in the U.S. bulletproof vest market. Furthermore, UHMWPEF composite materials have a ballistic limit (U/p) that is 10 times that of steel and more than twice that of glass fibers and aramids. Abroad, ballistic and anti-riot helmets made from UHMWPEF-reinforced resin composites have become a replacement for steel helmets and aramid-reinforced composite helmets.

In aerospace engineering, due to its lightweight, high-strength, and impact-resistant properties, UHMWPEF composite materials are used in various aircraft wing tip structures, spacecraft structures, and buoyant aircraft. These fibers are also used in space shuttle landing deceleration parachutes and cables for hanging heavy objects on aircraft, replacing traditional steel cables and synthetic fiber ropes. The development of UHMWPEF is progressing rapidly in these applications.

Jiangsu Jonnyma New Materials Co., Ltd. is a national high-tech enterprise integrating the research, production, and sales of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber. It provides differentiated UHMWPEF product solutions for niche customers. The company has established 16 high-tech production lines for UHMWPEF and 8 production lines for high-strength, cut-resistant covered yarns, with an annual production capacity exceeding 2,500 tons. The products are primarily sold in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangxi, Shandong, and other provinces and cities, and are also exported to the U.S., Europe, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, and India, with a supply-demand imbalance currently in place.

The company boasts strong technical strength and a robust research and development team. It has established the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for High-Performance Fibers and a Jiangsu Provincial Graduate Workstation. It also collaborates closely with various research institutions, including the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Nantong University, and Southern University of Science and Technology.

Jiangsu Jonnyma New Materials Co., Ltd. has long used Chemie’s L-QD330 high-temperature liquid-phase synthetic oil and gas/liquid two-phase high-temperature synthetic heat transfer oils for their high-strength, high-modulus polyethylene fiber production lines and research centers. These products have clear advantages over the previously used French brand alkylbenzene mixed-type heat transfer oils in terms of kinematic viscosity, thermal stability, heat transfer performance, operational costs, lifespan, and energy efficiency. As a result, Chemie has secured continuous orders from the company.

Furthermore, Chemie Heat Transfer Technology, leveraging its inherent advantages in the chemical fiber sector and deep expertise in the field, has taken the lead in entering high-strength, high-modulus polyethylene fiber engineering projects, which are considered “bottleneck” projects in developed countries. The Know-how process package originated from the Special Fiber Research Group of Donghua University. Early UHMWPEF production lines, such as those built by Shaoyang Second Textile Machine and Yancheng Shenhe, as well as numerous lines constructed and operated by Chemie, predominantly used Chemie’s synthetic heat transfer oils. In recent years, high-strength, high-modulus polyethylene fiber ballistic armor composite material molding projects, including those by Tianjin AVIC Armor Technology, Wuhan Ship Design Institute, and Sichuan Lingchuan Special Industry, have also adopted Chemie’s Eurotherm 320/340/350 high-temperature synthetic heat transfer oils.
