The Yellow Bag
The Yellow Bag
Yellow was never my color. I considered it loud, attention-seeking, and entirely too cheerful. Then a cluster of yellow flowers bloomed in my backyard and slowly changed my mind. Before long, I found myself appreciating its warmth and energy.
I was equally indifferent to handbags. Brands never interested me; practicality did. Then one day I spotted a bright yellow brand crossbody bag. The size was perfect, the compartments sensible, and the color impossible to ignore. Against all odds, I bought it.
The moment it arrived; I fell in love.
For years, the yellow bag accompanied me everywhere. It carried my essentials, survived countless outings, and became less of an accessory and more of a trusted companion.
Then came the FIFA World Cup.
My husband had warned me about the stadium’s strict bag policy. Only transparent plastic bags were allowed. Apparently, FIFA had not consulted my yellow bag.
At the entrance, security stopped me.
“You have two choices,” they said. “Walk back to the storage truck or throw the bag away.”
Throw it away?
My heart skipped a beat.
My husband looked at me and asked the practical question:
“Is the bag really worth it?”
Financially? Probably not.
Emotionally? Absolutely.
The bag showed signs of wear and had long lost whatever value it once had. But it knew exactly where my keys lived, faithfully protected my phone, and had accompanied me through years of everyday adventures.
So off I marched toward the storage truck, a journey that felt longer than it was. After standing in a lengthy line and paying what felt like a ransom fee, I finally secured my yellow companion.
By the time we returned to our seats, we had missed the first — and only — goal of the game.
Thousands of fans witnessed a memorable FIFA moment. I witnessed a storage truck.
I still feel a small pang of guilt for making my husband endure the adventure. Yet when the evening ended, my yellow bag and I walked out together.
The score will fade from memory. The game itself may blur with time.
But I will always remember the day FIFA evaluated my loyalty — and my yellow bag won.
It is finally time to retire her and find a successor. If so, she has certainly earned it.
