A merry heart doeth good like medicine, but a broken spiritdrieth the bones. Proverbs 17:22
Its great to take yourself serious. You should set goals and build systems around achieving your goals. Taking yourself in a serious manner can be looked at as strength when it means self-respect and responsibility.
I don’t know about you, but I really feel some type of way with people who take themselves to seriously, I look at them as “Debbie Downers.” You know, they are always walking around with a negative vibe.
When you are around them you feel like you need to walk on egg shells fearing that they may break if you say something that will cause them to tighten up. “Living their life being uptight with such a serious attitude can come at a cost.”
People who take themelves serious never take the time to bask in their accomplishments. You are always in a battle with yourself, your life. Its great to be ambious and have expectations bigger than yourself.
When you don’t take the time to actknowledge your progress and recognize what you’ve achieved because you are to busy looking for the next goal. That isn't good or healthy for you or the people around you.
Psychologists warn that taking oneself too seriously acts as a “cage” that stifles personal growth, fosters anxiety, and hinders genuine connection with others, often resulting in increased mental exhaustion.
People who take themselves to seriously have a serious lack of humor. They are control freaks, God forbid you say something to them not meaning any harm and they will flip the script on you in a heart beat. They will take what you say as a personal attack. “You be like what the hell?”
Not recognizing the cost that comes with taking yourself seriouly is serious business. It can cost you creativity, connection, and peace of mind. Mentally it drains your energy by forcing you into a continuous “self-monitoring” loop, while socially it makes you ridgid, defensive and less approachable. This causes you to miss out:
- On joy and laughter, thinking that you have to be perfect, professional, or in control at all times. With this mindset they have a hard time laughing at themselves when they make mistakes.
- Carrying unecessary stress causes you to often feel responsible for controlling every outcome and every opinion that others have of them.
- Taking Yourself seriously usually means trying your work too closely to your ego. If a project fails, you feel like you are a failure which breeds unnecessary anxiety and perfectionism.
- Un-warrented self- importance can lead to lecturing, unsolicited advice, or defensiveness when challenged, which naturally pushes friends and colleagues away.
- People who take themselves too seriously often attach their identity to always being right or successful.
One of the strongest qualities a person can develop is the ability is to work hard, stay humble, laugh at mistakes, learn from failure, and keep moving forward.
