Developing an IETM Level 4 system for a complex defence platform is an exercise in structured information architecture. Before a single hyperlink is created or a hotspot is configured, the developer must receive and carefully audit a comprehensive set of source inputs. Understanding precisely what these inputs are, and why each type matters, helps OEMs prepare more effectively and results in superior final products.

The Architecture Behind IETM Level 4

Unlike its lower-level counterparts, IETM Level 4 stores all technical content in a relational database. Content modules can be linked, searched, and retrieved independently of the linear structure found in traditional printed manuals. For smaller systems, the list contracts significantly a standalone sensor or LRU may only require a User Handbook, Technical Manual, and Spare Parts List. There is no universal template; the correct document set is determined by what the system actually requires to operate, maintain, and support.

Drawings: The Visual Intelligence Layer

Technical drawings are not supplementary materials in an IETM Level 4 context they are core interactive assets. The developer uses them to create hotspots: clickable regions on diagrams that link directly to relevant procedures, parts data, or other content modules. A well-drawn and clearly labelled set of engineering drawings directly improves the interactive quality of the final IETM Level 4 system.

Images and Video

Photographic images and instructional videos can be embedded within the IETM to support maintenance tasks, operational sequences, and training. OEMs should supply any available visual media alongside the document package.

Subject Matter Experts: The Intelligence Behind the Interactivity

No IETM developer regardless of experience can independently determine every cross reference, every related topic linkage, or every hotspot placement. These decisions require domain knowledge that only the OEM’s technical team possesses. Subject Matter Experts are therefore classified as a direct input required to make IETM Level 4 fully functional and compliant.

Without SME engagement, an IETM Level 4 project is technically incomplete. With it, the system becomes a genuinely intelligent maintenance and operations support tool.
