Beyond the Obvious Ones

Three people I personally know are making between $5,000 and $20,000 a month using AI, without a startup, without investors, without a team. Two of them were doing something completely different a year ago.
What gets talked about everywhere — AI for business, automation, chatbots, consultancy — is either already crowded or being taken over by companies with resources most people will never have.
What follows is different. These are things that work at the individual level. Some are already making people real money right now. Some require more upfront work but have a clear path once you crack them. None of them require you to compete with a tech company.
1. Automating Affiliate Marketing with AI
This one is for people who already know a bit about affiliate marketing, but even if you do not, the barrier to getting started is genuinely low.
What the people killing it right now are doing differently from everyone else is this: they are not posting manually. They are not writing one article at a time. They are creating bulk videos and images through APIs and automating the entire pipeline — scheduling, posting, tracking, adjusting — all with AI.
What this looks like in practice:
- AI monitors trending categories and affiliate products in real time
- AI generates content in bulk, not one piece but hundreds at once, video and image
- Tools automate the scheduling and posting across platforms like Pinterest, YouTube, and TikTok
- AI tracks what is converting and shifts the content focus accordingly
The people doing this well are not influencers. They are operators. They find a trending affiliate category, build the pipeline, test what converts, and scale the volume. When something hits, the returns compound fast because the content engine is already running.
This needs some basic knowledge to start. You need to understand how affiliate links work, which platforms pay well, and enough about the tools to set up the pipeline. But it is not deep technical knowledge. The people I know who are killing it with this are not developers or marketers by background. They just took the time to learn the system.
2. Dropshipping, But the Part Nobody Talks About
People talk about dropshipping automation and most of what they say is useless. Automating invoices, automating order fulfillment-
what is the point of any of that if no orders are coming in?
The real problem in dropshipping, where 99 out of 100 stores fail, is promotion. Getting the product in front of people at scale without burning money on ads that do not convert.
The part that actually works, and that almost nobody talks about, is automating the content side.
After the store is built, the job is volume.
Thousands of pieces of content. Articles. Pinterest pins. YouTube videos. Short-form clips. The kind of output that would take a team of ten people creating manually. AI handles all of it. You set up the system, point it at your product niche, and the content machine runs.
This is not glamorous. It takes time to set up and even more time to start seeing traction. But once it works, you are promoting a product you own the margins on, through content you did not have to write or film yourself, at a volume no competitor doing things manually can match.
The people winning at this are thinking like media operations, not like store owners.
3. AI Models for Specific Niche Audiences
This one sounds boring when you first hear it. And it is harder than the first two because there is real upfront cost involved. But the people who have cracked it are quietly doing very well.
The basic idea is building AI-generated models, personas, or characters and targeting them at very specific interest groups. High-quality AI video generation tools like Higgsfield are what make this possible at a level that actually attracts and keeps an audience.
The upfront cost is the main barrier.
Quality matters here more than in the other categories, and the tools that produce quality results cost real money. That keeps most people out, which is part of why the people already in it have more room to operate.
The targeting is everything. Not “people who like fitness.” Something far more specific. A hyper-specific subculture, interest group, or aesthetic that has a dedicated audience but almost nobody building AI content for them. That specificity is what creates the following, and the following is what creates the income.
Harder than the first two. More potential once it works.
4. The Automated News and Newsletter Business
Most people who run successful newsletters on Substack or Beehiiv right now are not writing their content. Not in the traditional sense.
Here is how the workflow actually looks for many of them:
An AI pulls the top stories from a specific niche every day. It sends a summary to the operator via Telegram every morning.
The operator reviews it, prompts an AI to write the newsletter edition, adds their framing or a few personal lines, and publishes. Tools like n8n handle the automation between each step.
The subscription on Substack goes for $5 a month. Some of the people running this in niche topics are sitting at 1,000 to 2,000 paying subscribers. That is $5,000 to $10,000 per month from a workflow that mostly runs on its own.
Getting there is hard. Growing a subscriber base in any niche takes time and consistency. The early months are slow. But the people who stuck through it are now running what looks like a media business from a single laptop, spending maybe an hour a day on it.
The ones improving their numbers fastest are the ones investing in better image and video tools to make the content more visual, more shareable, and more worth paying for.
5. AI Freelancing for Specific YouTube Channels
This is niche, and it requires real work upfront. But the people who have built it properly would not trade it.
The model is becoming the AI content supplier for 5 to 8 specific YouTube channels in one category. Once you have that many relationships, the income is very good and it compounds because you already know exactly what each channel needs and how they work.
Here is a real example of what this looks like-
A crime documentary channel needs visual clips to tell a story. A year ago, that meant sourcing stock footage, expensive recreations, or going without. Now AI generates it. The channel sends you the script or the story context, the editor tells you what specific clip is needed, and you deliver it using AI generation tools.
It sounds complicated from the outside. If you have spent any time with video editing or freelancing in the creative space, it is actually not. The tools are accessible. The demand is real and growing as more channels realize what AI can produce for their visual storytelling.
Getting the first few clients is the hard part. The first orders require you to prove the quality of your output. After that, referrals do the work.
Once you are in with a channel, you become part of their regular production workflow. Some freelancers doing this hire additional people from Fiverr to handle overflow volume. The margin on that is obvious. Five to eight channels paying you every month is a real business.
6. Buying Underperforming Digital Assets and Improving Them with AI
There are hundreds of small digital businesses for sale right now on platforms like Acquire.com and Flippa. Niche websites, email newsletters with real subscribers, small tools with paying customers, directory sites with steady traffic.
Many of these generate $50,000 to $200,000 per year but are stuck because the owner ran out of time, energy, or ideas for what to do next. They sell for 2 to 4 times annual revenue.
AI changes what you can do with them after you buy.
A newsletter with 20,000 subscribers can produce twice the content with a fraction of the time. A directory can be improved with AI-generated descriptions, better search, and email sequences that were never set up. A small tool gets new features built in days instead of months.
Buy for $100,000. Improve with AI. Double the revenue. Sell for $400,000.
You do not need technical skills for this. You need judgment about what a business is actually worth, what is holding it back, and what it could become with better operations behind it.
7. Vibe Coding Into a Profession You Already Know
AI coding tools like Cursor, Bolt.new, and Replit have changed who can build software.
A person who understands a profession’s specific workflow problems can now build a working tool by describing what they want in plain language. No coding background needed. Describe it. Test it. Adjust it. A working prototype in a day.
This gives people with domain knowledge a real advantage over developers who do not have that knowledge. A dental hygienist who knows what practice management software gets wrong can build something better. A freight broker who lives inside the inefficiency of current tools can build a replacement. A wedding photographer who knows exactly what clients need before, during, and after a shoot can build the tool other photographers have been waiting for.
73% of successful one-person SaaS products target sub-segments that bigger companies ignore because the market looks too small for them to bother with. $49 to $199 per month from 2,000 users in one specific profession is between $1.2 million and $4.8 million per year, with no competition from companies that would rather chase larger markets.
The product does not have to be perfect. It has to solve one specific pain point for one specific group. You already know what that pain point is. That is the advantage.
Seven things. Not a hundred.
Seven that have a clear enough path to start, manageable enough competition to win, and a ceiling high enough to matter.
In the coming article, I will provide more.
