11 Thoughts I Had While Watching Off Campus
Spoiler: None of them were normal.
Hannah & Garrett from Off Campus
BookTok has spent months yelling at me about Off Campus. Not recommending it. Not suggesting it. Yelling.
Every third video seemed to feature someone staring into the distance, clutching a blanket, and declaring that Garrett Graham had permanently altered their brain chemistry. Naturally, I assumed everyone was being dramatic.
Naturally, I assumed everyone was exaggerating. Then I watched it.
Unfortunately, they were not.
1. Why does every hockey player on television look like he was manufactured in the same laboratory?
There appears to be a secret formula for fictional hockey players. Tall enough to block the sun. Cocky enough to be annoying. Charming enough to get away with it.
I’m not saying every sports romance male lead is the same person in a different jersey. I’m just saying if you swapped them around, it might take me a while to notice.
2. Hannah is stronger than me because I would’ve folded by now.
The thing about Hannah is that she sees straight through Garrett’s nonsense.
The thing about me is that I would’ve lasted approximately forty-five minutes. Not because of the face, but because of the persistence.
Garrett approaches flirting with the confidence of someone who’s never once drafted and deleted a text message.
Must be nice. (can't relate though)
3. Nobody warned me there would be this much staring.
At some point, I became convinced these people could communicate entire plot points through eye contact alone.
Every glance lasts slightly longer than necessary. Every look carries enough tension to qualify as dialogue. Halfway through the series, I stopped listening and started observing. The staring deserves its own supporting actor nomination.
4. That’s a crazy thing to say to someone you’ve known for three days.
One thing romance fiction will never do is respect a realistic timeline.
These people meet and immediately begin having conversations with the emotional intensity of a couple that’s been married for twelve years and owns matching patio furniture.
Somehow? I buy into it every single time.
5. The sexual tension just paid this month’s rent.
Some shows rely on plot twists. Some rely on cliffhangers. Off Campus looked at those options and decided to run entirely on chemistry.
A charged conversation here. A lingering look there.
One accidental moment of closeness and suddenly I’m sitting up straighter on the couch like I’ve been personally invited into the situation.
6. I suddenly understand why BookTok wouldn’t shut up about this.
There’s always one romance every few years that escapes its target audience and becomes everyone’s personality for a month.
I used to think people were being dramatic about Off Campus. Then I watched three episodes in one sitting and started sending voice notes about fictional hockey players.
Growth is embarrassing sometimes.
7. Why did that work?
This became my most repeated sentence while watching.
A joke that shouldn’t have landed. A line that should’ve been cheesy. A scene that should’ve made me roll my eyes, and yet somehow the show keeps pulling it off.
Romance is a strange genre because ninety percent of it is execution. The ingredients aren’t new, but when they’re done well, you forget you’ve seen them before.
8. Hockey is actually the least important thing happening here.
I mean this affectionately. The hockey exists. I acknowledge its presence. I wish it well. But every time the show returned to an actual game, my brain was already wondering what was happening off the ice.
That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give it. The romance never feels like something happening between hockey scenes. The hockey feels like something happening between romance scenes.
9. Wow, a man remembering a woman’s coffee order is considered an advanced display of affection.
Here’s the thing.
The coffee order isn’t about the coffee. It’s about attention. The reason these moments work isn’t that they are grand romantic gestures.
It’s because somebody paid attention. A remembered detail. A passing comment. A tiny thing that would have been easy to forget. Somewhere along the way, romance audiences collectively decided that noticing things is attractive.
Honestly? Fair enough.
10. Apparently, our current romantic obsession is men who voluntarily wake up at 5 a.m. to skate on frozen water.
We’ve had billionaires. We’ve had vampires. We’ve had brooding men with dark secrets.
Now the cultural pendulum has swung toward hockey players. I don’t make the rules. I merely observe them. However, I will admit that Off Campus makes a surprisingly compelling case for the hockey-player-industrial complex.
11. Why does a fictional man saying “Are you okay?” hit harder than most love confessions?
After all the chemistry, flirting, and tension, this is the thing I kept coming back to.
Not the grand moments. Not the dramatic ones. The small moments. The moments where somebody notices, checks in, pays attention, and shows up.
For all its charm, that’s what Off Campus understands best. The fantasy isn’t really the hockey player. It’s being cared for with that level of intention.
Which is probably why so many people fell in love with this story in the first place, and, much to my annoyance, why I finally understand the hype. The tiny moments where someone notices something is wrong and decides to show up. Romance has always been less about grand gestures and more about attention.
Maybe that’s why Off Campus works.
Beneath all the flirting, staring, and enough tension to power a small city, it’s really just a story about being seen.
Which is considerably harder to resist than a hockey player, apparently.
