Why Mental Health Education Must Be Mandatory in Indian Schools: Insights from PILs
Mental health is essential for students, yet many schools in India fail to provide proper guidance on stress, anxiety, or emotional well-being. To address this, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed, seeking to make mental health education mandatory across all schools.
The book PIL: Power, Purpose, and People’s Rights by Middlemen Asia highlights how PILs empower citizens to tackle pressing social issues. Using this legal tool, the PIL emphasizes that mental health education is integral to the Right to Life (Article 21) and the Right to Education (Article 21A).
Structured mental health programs can reduce stigma, equip students with coping skills, and foster inclusive, supportive environments. The PIL also calls for trained educators, standardized curricula, and continuous evaluation to ensure effectiveness.
