I’m Not the Penny You Thought I Was: I’ve Changed

I’m like Johnny Cash. I’ve been everywhere, man. I’ve been in your thoughts. I’ve been jingling in your pockets. I’ve been in the mean streets. I’ve been dumped in large trash bins. And enumerated in mason jars.

I wait to be turned in by you.

You need me when you run short. You crack open your piggy bank to use me.

I don’t rain from heaven. I’m the forgotten one. I am made of copper. No one ever says, “A copper for your thoughts,” do they?

The American Treasury Department is killing me. I will no longer be mass-produced.

Have I changed the way you view change? Change in your wallet? Change in your life? Change for me was swift. Can you round me up or down? Only now to the nearest nickel. I’m jealous of nickels.

I’ve been around for over 230 years. I can’t be shiny and new again.

I’m retired.

You could find me washed up in the sand, under your cold feet, while you sip pineapple-colored drinks in Margaritaville. I hope Abraham Lincoln isn’t disappointed that his face isn’t drinking with you anymore.

Was my life worth a penny?

I can’t embrace the change.

This story was inspired by the Trump administration’s desire to stop production of the penny. The last order to create new pennies went out this month. What will become of the penny? We don’t know. We’ll just have to wait and see.
