Topic: Marching Orders Text: Mark 16:15

We had an amazing month in June discussing what it means to be built to last, culminating in the importance of finishing strong. This month, we begin a new series, and today we will look at our marching orders as Christians.

A marching order is a military term for the official instructions given to troops to deploy or move out. It consists of legally binding commands detailing when, where, and how soldiers are to carry out their mission. Receiving marching orders signifies that the period of planning and waiting is over and that active operations have begun.

As believers and soldiers of Christ, our marching orders are found in our opening text and are also recorded in Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus commanded, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:19–20).

The emphasis of this command is found in one simple word: “Go.” Christianity was never intended to be a passive faith. We have been commissioned to take the gospel to the nations.

But what is this gospel we have been commanded to preach?

Paul clearly summarises it in 1 Corinthians 15:1–4: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. He then appeared to many witnesses, whose testimony confirmed His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:5–8).

The significance of Christ’s death and resurrection is profound. Through Him, both Jews and Gentiles who were once far from God have now been reconciled into one body (Ephesians 2:13–18). Through His finished work, the dominion of sin has been broken, and the righteous requirement of the Law has been fulfilled in those who walk after the Spirit (Romans 8:1–4).

This is the good news. It is the gift of God’s grace, received through faith and not earned by works (Ephesians 2:8–9). Whoever believes in Jesus Christ will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

Beloved, this gospel is for every nation, every tribe, every language, and every people. No one is exempt from the need to hear the message of salvation.

Our marching orders are therefore clear: ensure that the gospel reaches them. As Paul asked, “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14).

So, go. Start where you are. Begin with your immediate community. Wherever God has placed you, ensure that the gospel is heard by faithfully proclaiming Christ.
