Discover Peaceful and Less Crowded in Garunggang Cave

For the second time this year, I visited caves in my country; the first was at Gong Cave in Pacitan, East Java, and the second was at Garunggang Cave in Bogor, West Java. I was thrilled and captivated by the beauty of nature’s creations.

Goa Garunggang, Jawa Barat dan Goa Gong, Jawa Timur memiliki perbedaan yang cukup signifikan, dimulai dari struktur batuannya, letak lokasinya, kedalaman goa, tingkat airnya, bahkan batu penyusunnya pun berbeda.

Goa Gong, Jawa Timur memiliki satu mulut Goa besar dengan kedalaman goa mencapai 256 meter dibawah permukaan tanah, sekiranya membutuhkan waktu 1–2 jam untuk menyusuri struktur batuan stalaktit dan stalagmitnya. Dindingnya dibasahi oleh tetes-tetes air, dan dibeberapa titik dapat ditepuk dan mengeluarkan bunyi “dengg” seperti tabuhan gong yang ditabuh. Di dalam Goa Gong terdapat beberapa sendang (kolam) yang berisi air, namun di sepandangan mata saya tidak terlihat jelas asal aliran air tersebut.

Sedangkan Goa Garunggang memiliki pekarangan yang luas, dengan tumpukan batu disana-sini. Luas Goa Garunggang sekitar 1 hektar, namun kedalaman Goanya hanya sekitar 5–10 meter di bawah permukaan tanah. Pintu masuknya kecil hanya berupa tangga dengan kapasitas pijakan 1 orang. Di dalamnya mengalir deras air yang berasal dari aliran air di atas (pegunungan/gunung).

For the people who search peace, you can visit Garunggang Cave because it’s really majestic. Before you arrived on the cave, you must trekking 4 Km passing through a residential area, walking through rice fields, and plantation.

To be honest, i don’t know when i first became fascinated by caves, maybe it was a long time ago, when i watched a Thailand movie called The Cave, in which cave divers had to rescue a group of young soccer players. The movie based on true story, amidst feelings of hopeless i realized cave is so beautiful. Although the rescue team managed to save all the missing victims, one rescuer lost his life. I realized that behind the cave’s beauty lay dangers hidden in the darkness.

The cave holds mysteries, it’s so dark that we can’t see anything without light from headlamp or flashlight. But i feel at ease, someday i’d like to try cave diving. Maybe cave diving is one of the things on my bucket list (BIGGEST BUCKET LIST).

Back to Garunggang Cave, i’m so happy look the sendang full of water (also have a water flow). Spending time to lay down on the grass and rocks, enjoying the gentle breeze, enjoy the surrounding scenery. Cave are subterranean masterpieces sculpted by water and time over millions of years. I think i can spend whole day just lay down on the Garunggang Cave.

As i entered the small, dark cave, i heard the lovely sound of trickling water coming from inside. The air supply was limited, but the shimmering cave walls were a real feast for the eyes. I wondered if the cave actually stretched far into the depths, but there was no guarantee i’d be able to find my way back, since the cave was still in a very pristine, natural state.

Saturday, June 6, 2026, Garunggang Cave was a bit crowded, but we still enjoyed the scenery and the atmosphere. In my opinion, if you want a quieter atmosphere with no crowds at all, you should visit on a weekday. Spending time in the great outdoors made me feel refreshed.
