thought a master’s was my ticket—now I’m drowning in the cost of my psychology degree

At 18, I thought I had it all figured out. Psychology fascinated me, and I was certain that my undergraduate degree would be the first step toward a meaningful career. “Just get through undergrad, then go for a master’s, and you’ll be set,” I told myself. But no one warned me about the cost. No one told me that two years of grad school could cost more than a house.
I sat staring at my laptop screen, my stomach twisting as I scrolled through tuition costs. $80,000. And that’s in-state. I clicked onto another program. $90,000. Another. $75,000. The numbers blurred together, each one a heavy weight pressing down on my chest.
I could barely breathe.
I had worked hard to get here. Good grades, relevant experience, everything my professors told me would prepare me for graduate school. But they left out the part where financial reality hits like a freight train. A BA in psychology isn’t enough to get a stable, well-paying job. If I stop now, I’ll be stuck in entry-level roles that barely scrape by. But if I go forward, I’ll be drowning in debt before I even begin my career.
The worst part? A PhD is the real goal. But I don’t have the research experience to make me competitive for fully funded programs. I should’ve thought about this sooner, but how could I have known at 18? No one tells you that passion alone isn’t enough—you need strategy, foresight, and apparently, a trust fund.
I started searching for alternatives. Maybe a cheaper master’s program. Maybe one abroad. Maybe a fully funded assistantship, though those are rare. Every option felt like a compromise, a step further from the career I had dreamed of.
I’m not the only one in this position. So many students are blindsided by the cost of continuing education. We’re told that a master’s is necessary, but no one tells us how to pay for it. So, what now?
I’m reaching out, hoping for answers. Has anyone found an affordable, APA- or CACREP-accredited master’s program that still leads to a real career? One that won’t leave me drowning in debt? Because right now, for the first time, I regret choosing this path.
