She Died Smiling — And That’s What Broke Me…
📘 Set in post-bombed Japan, 1945
They say the world cried when the bombs fell. They say Japan suffered as a nation. But some people didn’t suffer as part of anything. They suffered alone — like she did.
No one remembered her name. Even she stopped saying it. She wasn’t cute like those storybook children. She didn’t have round cheeks or shining eyes. She had dirt on her skin, scars across her neck, and hair falling out from radiation — And anything usual you would ask me that i noticed was her -smile.
She was an orphan since birth. No food. No shelter. especially after the war. Just rubble, her shadow, and a smile that somehow never cracked.
When the American planes came, people screamed and ran. But when silence returned… no one looked back at the ones like her.
She wandered the outskirts of the now destroyed town.
Hands trembling, she picked up scattered rice and dusted it off with torn sleeves. She tried offering it to strangers.
“You can have some,” she said, voice shaking. “I found enough for both of us.”
No one took it. Some turned away. Some called her “sick,” or “unclean.” She wasn’t. Just not beautiful, not worth saving, not worth the pity people saved for someone else.
She once tapped an old woman’s shoulder. The woman screamed.
She once left food beside a sleeping child. In the morning, the food was taken, but she was cursed at from afar, but she has a smile on her face as she helped someone.
She never begged. Never cried. But at night, she talked to herself — stories, names, dreams. She slept anywhere but away from people as that cute little girl has realized that people didn’t liked her.
What have she gone through after knowing all that, … i cant seem to describe…
She was just trying to help people in whatever way she can, she was always like that since the earlier days in orphanage.
she treated everyone kindly but other kids, choose to ignore her as her face had a little scar that looked ugly to them..
But then also, she never left her kindness…
At the end…
The war ended. Celebrations echoed far off. Cities rose. But no one noticed the girl dying in the alley.
She didn’t die of hunger. Or radiation.
She died unseen.
Her final breath was taken while looking at the sunrise. A torn smile remained.
And that smile …. broke me down..
Tears flow and unimaginable sadness i feel when i remember that cute child face…
And the things she went through was enough to broke adults… but she maintained her kindness till her last moment… and her last smile…
There were no graves for girls like her.
In, Wars the situation gets worse but isnt the condition of orphans like her the same even in present time…
