The Korat

That’s Ella!

That’s Ella!

It would appear my home has been invaded by a Korat.

If you’re not familiar with the breed, don’t feel bad; I had never heard of it until one of the housemate’s nurses at dialysis saw the photos of her and cried out, “You’ve got a Korat!”

Well, first up, she’s got us, not the other way round.

Second, what the fuck is a Korat??

While Ella is a magnificently beautiful cat all on her own, we had not the slightest inkling that she might be of a specific breed. Hell, we adopted her from the humane society, breed is the last thing you care about in that instance; providing a loving home to a cat in need, that’s the thing.

Nevertheless, curiosity about this particular breed of which we’ve never heard caused us to do some research, and to conclude… yeah, she shows the signs.

Heart-shaped head? Check. Low body-fat percentage? Check. Ears rounded at the tip rather than pointed? Check. Front paws shorter than rear? Check. Vocal as fuck? Hell yeah. Intelligent, playful, likes people but not so much other cats? That’s our girl.

Well, fuck. Looks like we’ve got a Korat.

If I’m throwing a lot of profanity, understand that I didn’t sleep much and it’s barely seven am as I’m writing this.

The Korat is considered a good luck cat, originating from Thailand. It can be differentiated from other, similar-looking cats by a few notable points, most of which I listed above. The Russian Blue, for example, is more built on straight-lines, pointier nose and ears; the Korat has gentler curves, and a slightly tilted nose at the end.

I could go on and on about the differences and the notable points, but you get the overall.

We aren’t cat snobs; we don’t plan to attempt to register her, nor enter her in shows. We’re happy with her just the way she is. And now we’ve another reason to be happy this cat’s come into our lives- we’ve gotten to learn from her already! Also, she has a fondness for belly rubs, and is amazingly eager to drink from the faucet, as well as a tendency to demand entry when any of her people go to either the bathroom or the kitchen; if there’s a sink there, she’ll be on the counter, waiting for you to turn on the water.

So there- you’ve gotten a bit of learning on this Saturday. Hope everyone’s having a good one.
