My First Experience as a Mentor

Recently, I started exploring mentorship through Unstop, and honestly, I never thought someone would actually book a session with me.

I still feel like I’m learning myself.

So when I first started mentorship, my biggest thought was: “What valuable advice can I even give someone?”

I never considered myself an expert or someone who has everything figured out. But then I realized something important — you don’t always need to know everything to help someone. Sometimes, sharing your experiences, mistakes, learnings, and small insights can also guide people who are just starting.

So I decided to give it a try.

And surprisingly, the very next day, someone booked a mentorship session with me.

I was genuinely shocked.

I remember looking at the notification and thinking: “Wait… seriously?” “Someone actually wants mentorship from me?”

It felt unreal for a moment.

I was excited, nervous, and honestly overthinking a little before the session started. I kept wondering if I would be able to help properly or not.

Then the session happened.

She told me that my profile was the reason she applied for mentorship, and hearing that felt really special because I never thought my journey or experiences could inspire someone else in that way.

During the session, we talked about a lot of things:

  • LinkedIn
  • Resume building
  • Jobs and internships
  • Career confusion
  • My own experiences and learnings

And honestly, the conversation felt very natural.

I wasn’t trying to act like someone who knows everything. I was simply sharing what I had learned through trial, mistakes, exploration, and experiences across different roles and domains.

What made me happiest was seeing that she genuinely found the session helpful and valuable.

And yes… I even asked for honest feedback at the end because it was my very first mentorship session and I really wanted to understand how I could improve.

That experience made me realize something very simple: Sometimes we underestimate how much we already know.

There are always people who are a few steps behind us, looking for guidance in areas we have already explored.

You don’t need to be perfect to start helping others. You just need to be honest about your journey.

Now, I’m looking forward to conducting more mentorship sessions, meeting more people, learning from different conversations, and slowly building something meaningful out of it.

And honestly, this is something I never imagined myself doing before.

But life really surprises you sometimes in the most unexpected ways.
