THE TRAP OF PERSPECTIVE

A person’s perspective is much like a camera lens. We can zoom in and examine a specific detail, a problem, a pain, or a question with great precision. Yet we can also zoom out and see the larger picture — the relationships, patterns, and movements within which that detail exists.
Both abilities are essential. Zooming in allows us to understand deeply. Zooming out allows us to understand broadly.
But imagine what happens when someone zooms in for so long that they forget how to zoom out. They begin to believe that what they are looking at is the entirety of reality.
A small problem becomes an insurmountable mountain. A temporary setback becomes a hopeless future. A passing pain becomes life itself.
At that point, the mind is no longer limited by circumstances. It is limited by its own perspective. This is when a person becomes trapped in a situation and can no longer see a way forward. This is when they gradually close themselves off and lose touch with other possibilities, other perspectives, and the world beyond their own thoughts.
In other words, they no longer see the whole picture. They only see a single piece of it. And perhaps that is what it means to become imprisoned by one’s own perspective.
