In BREAD WILL WALK, the official city ends at street level.
Above ground, Montreal is partitioned into illuminated Sanctuaries under permanent emergency decree. Rations fall from aircraft. Curfews regulate breath. Population repartition moves bodies like inventory. THE MILL manufactures synthetic salvation and calls it stability.
Below Chuldale Estate, another system operates.
The tunnels were once service corridors: heating ducts, parking access, utility channels. After vehicles were confiscated and budgets collapsed into emergency governance, the underground was abandoned. Residents reopened it.
Now it functions as a parallel circulation network beneath administrative order.
Above ground, the Hungry Living hunt Walking Bread as mobile food stock. Below ground, Walking Bread are hidden, traded, tested, and sometimes protected.
Contraband food moves through Chuldale in silence. Not in crates. In backpacks. In coat linings. In hollowed toolboxes. Children memorize which stairwell leads to which chamber. Chalk marks on concrete indicate patrol density overhead. A single knock pattern signals immunity brokers.
Immunity is the most valuable currency in the tunnels.
If you are immune, you can eat Walking Bread and remain human. You become employable. Useful. Protected. If you are not, one bite converts you into fresh inventory.
In Chuldale’s tunnels, testing is informal and constant.
A slice is offered. A bite is taken. Everyone waits.
If the person survives, they are recruited into distribution chains that ferry edible bodies upward. If they convulse and transform, they are processed quickly. The tunnels waste nothing.
This is how the reverse epidemic deepens: not through chaos, but through logistics.
At the center of Chuldale Estate live two siblings who have not yet fled the Sanctuary perimeter.
Big Sister knows the tunnels exist before she ever sees them. She hears them through the floor at night. Scraping. Whispered transactions. The low hum of a portable scanner pressed against crust.
After Little Brother becomes Little Bread Brother, the tunnels stop being rumor.
They become option.
She carries him down a maintenance stairwell behind a laundry room. The air is damp and metallic. Extension cords snake along the walls. Someone has strung battery lamps at intervals like an imitation sky.
Little Bread Brother does not resist. He shuffles gently beside her, hollow eyed, warm.
People look.
Not with horror.
With measurement.
A transformed body represents weeks of food for a tunnel cluster. Or leverage in a negotiation with an immunity broker. Or proof of concept in a private test.
Big Sister understands immediately that love has market value here.
A broker approaches. He does not threaten. He explains.
If she allows supervised testing of her brother’s crust, she will receive priority ration access. If she submits to an immunity trial herself and survives, she can join the tunnel distribution corps. If she fails, her brother will be retained for communal benefit.
He speaks in calm administrative tones. The underground mirrors the language of the state above it.
Scarcity is engineered through distribution.
In the tunnels, distribution is intimate.
Big Sister refuses.
For now.
She moves deeper into Chuldale’s network, past chambers where Walking Bread sit upright against walls, past rooms where immune workers catalog weight and density, past chalkboards calculating caloric yield versus population count.
She sees something else too.
Not every Walking Bread is inventory.
In one alcove, an elderly woman strokes the crust of a transformed partner as if it were still skin. In another, a group of children sit in a circle around a warm loaf and tell it stories. The transformed hum softly, neither consenting nor resisting.
The reversal acquires a second layer in Chuldale Estate.
Above ground, the Hungry Living hunt openly. Below ground, hunger is negotiated.
Big Sister feels the arithmetic tightening.
If she is immune, she and Little Bread Brother can ascend and register safely. If she is not, one bite ends her guardianship and converts her into what others will consume.
The tunnels amplify the central question of BREAD WILL WALK:
Is survival an instinct, or a system?
In Chuldale Estate, the apocalypse is not screaming. It is counted.
Bread is weighed. Immunity is tested. Love is priced.
The infected remain harmless.
The living remain dangerous.
And beneath the illuminated Sanctuaries, in damp corridors the state does not officially acknowledge, the reverse pandemic circulates quietly, sustained by appetite and organized by those who refuse to starve.
