Your App Store Link Is Broken on TikTok and Instagram — And You Probably Don’t Know It
The problem nobody tells you about
TikTok and Meta (Instagram, Facebook) don’t open links in your phone’s normal browser. Instead, they open them inside their own built-in “in-app browser.” Most of the time this is invisible to users and works fine for regular websites.
But App Store and Google Play links are a different story. Both TikTok and Instagram now block or interfere with direct app store links when they’re opened inside their in-app browser. Instead of landing on your app’s page, users either hit a dead end, or get a small “open in external browser” prompt buried in a menu — one that most people don’t understand and simply ignore.
The result: someone taps your link, nothing meaningful happens, and they move on. You lose the click, the download, and never even see it in your analytics as a failure — it just looks like “conversion is low.”

What your visitors see when they try to reach your App from TikTok
It’s not just your bio link — it’s everywhere
This isn’t limited to the link in your Instagram or TikTok bio. The same failure happens with:
- App Store / Play Store links placed directly on your own website, if that website is opened from a TikTok or Instagram in-app browser
- Existing bio-link and landing page tools like Linktree and similar services — most of them were never built to handle this specific redirect problem, so the App Store button just fails the same way
In other words, swapping tools doesn’t fix it. The issue lives in the platform’s browser, not in your link-in-bio setup.
Why most people don’t notice
This is what makes it dangerous: there’s no error message, no crash, nothing that clearly says “this failed because of TikTok.” It just looks like normal underperformance. Founders and marketers usually chalk it up to weak creative, wrong audience, or a slow onboarding funnel — when in reality, a meaningful share of clicks are dying silently before the user ever sees the App Store page.
If you’re running paid UGC, influencer campaigns, or organic TikTok/Instagram growth for an app, this is worth checking today. If your bio link, website, or landing page sends people straight to an App Store or Play Store URL, there’s a strong chance you’re losing installs you’re not tracking.
The fix: a simple redirect + tutorial layer
The actual fix is straightforward: instead of linking directly to the App Store, users need a small in-between step that detects where they’re coming from and handles it properly.
- If someone opens the link from a normal browser, they should land straight on the app store page — no extra steps.
- If someone opens it from inside TikTok or Instagram’s in-app browser, they need a quick, simple tutorial showing them how to open the link in their real browser, followed by an automatic redirect to the correct store once they do.
This is exactly what I built pleaseopen.me to do, after running into this exact wall myself while promoting my own iOS app on TikTok.
It’s a free tool, and the setup is intentionally simple: you don’t need to change your existing website or your Linktree/bio-link page. You just swap out your existing App Store or Google Play link with a pleaseopen.me link in the same place. That’s it.
From there:
- Visitors coming from a normal browser click through straight to your app, with no extra step or delay.
- Visitors coming from TikTok or Instagram’s in-app browser see a short, clear tutorial on how to open the link externally, then get automatically redirected to the right store the moment they do.
No rebuild, no new landing page, no dev work — just a drop-in replacement for the link you’re already using.

Worth checking today
If you’re spending money or effort driving traffic to an app from TikTok or Instagram, it’s worth testing your own link right now, from inside both apps, to see what actually happens. If it fails silently the way I described, that’s traffic and budget you’re currently losing without knowing it.
pleaseopen.me is free to set up and takes a couple of minutes. If you try it, I’d genuinely love feedback — I’m actively building on it based on what real users run into.
