You Don’t Learn AI — You Live With It: Creative Reinvention in the Age of AI

The only way to truly benefit from AI is to interact with it constantly, consciously and with an open mind. Doing so is what separates the pioneers from the bystanders.

Public discourse around artificial intelligence is filled with dire predictions and philosophical panic — most of it coming from people who either haven’t used AI much, or who are used to being the smartest voice in the room.

Many of them are impressive thinkers — and their arguments are often eloquent, even haunting. Yuval Noah Harari warns that AI could collapse truth itself. Geoffrey Hinton fears that we may have built something we can’t control. Tristan Harris, meanwhile, warns that generative AI could fuel synthetic relationships and weaponized persuasion, accelerating disinformation faster than society can respond.

I’m not an expert in AI development. I’m not a computer scientist, a VC, or a public intellectual. I’m just someone drawn to the benefits of AI — not in theory, but in practice. And what I’ve found is that when you engage deeply, consistently and personally with AI — not just as a tool, but as a kind of second brain — it doesn’t steal your creativity. It supercharges it.

The myth of “learning AI”

Much of today’s advice assumes that AI is a static skill — something you can learn once, check off and move on. Take a course. Watch a webinar. Get your “AI literacy” badge.

But that’s not how this works. The real challenge isn’t learning AI. It’s living with it. Which means showing up every day with openness, curiosity and a willingness to reshape your thinking and workflow as the tools evolve. It’s a mindset, not a module.

And that mindset requires time, humility and endurance. Not just for a few weeks, but indefinitely.

We are only at the beginning of this transformation. Today’s best practices may be obsolete by next year. New capabilities will continue to emerge, reshaping everything from writing to research, problem-solving to planning. AI is a mindset you must adopt. It’s not about learning AI. It’s about living with it, and embracing its evolving nature.

Reinvention is possible — but it requires real work

One of the most promising, if not the most promising, opportunities opened by AI is the chance for intellectuals, creatives and professionals of all stripes to reinvent themselves. But it’s not instant. It requires sustained engagement, deep reflection and the repurposing of existing skills in light of new possibilities.

Reid Hoffman describes generative AI as the start of a cognitive industrial revolution — not a threat to human intelligence, but a way to augment and accelerate it. I find his optimism refreshing. But what makes it credible is that he’s not speculating. He’s experimenting, using AI daily, and learning by doing.

That’s the real differentiator. Most critics talk about AI. The real transformation happens when you talk with it.

Some fear that AI will eliminate human meaning. Others believe it will create more meaning than ever before. I don’t pretend to know how this will play out. But I do know this:
