The World Bids Farewell To Queer Music Icon, Enya

Everyone knows Enya, one part of the lush trio; a layered, new age vocalist who captured a global audience first with her crossover hit “Orinoco Flow” and later, the album “A Day Without Rain” featuring the track “Only Time” that cradled a mourning country through the tragedy of 9/11.

Maybe you only heard of Enya from her collaboration with writer/director Peter Jackson and screenwriter/producer Phillipa Boyens, who recruited Enya to perform the title track from their epic “Lord of the Rings” saga in the early 2000’s. Or, maybe you read one of the sensational articles that routinely goes viral, discussing the fact that the reclusive Enya lives alone in her Ireland castle with an army of cats, creating a sort-of mythology around the singer.

The reality is this, dear readers: A fact many remain completely unaware of- Enya wasn’t just a singer. Eithene, the raven haired, blue eyed, velvet voiced mystery that captivated our imagination was the singer.

Enya was a group. Enya was comprised of Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin, the lead singer, Nicky Ryan, an award winning producer who gave the trio their signature sound, and his wife, Roma Ryan, the lyricist for all of the Enya songs you love. The three have collaborated under the name “Enya” since the the singer parted ways with her family music group, Clannad in 1982.

Although Eithne, being the sole performer of the trio became the front-facing figure of the group, both Nicky and Roma Ryan (Husband and Wife) contribute massively to each song across every album, with Roma writing and polishing every lyric, Nicky doing the sound engineering and production, layering every vocal and instrument hundreds of times to achieve that signature sound that captured the dreamy soundscapes that set imaginations on fire.

“Enya is three people” Eithne stated in a 2004 interview. “Without one of us it doesn’t work. If there was no Nicky or Roma or me, there would be no Enya. Enya is a collaboration project.”

The three brilliant artists founded Aigle Studios, their own space in which they would devote- literally- years to creating a single album. Due to the extreme detail work and deliberate isolation of the three person team, it often took 3–5 years to complete an album, with the latter original albums spread further about apart- there were 7 years between their Christmas album “And Winter Came” and their last album which was released in 2015, “Dark Sky Island.” In between there was a peppering of collections and box sets featuring greatest hits across their expansive career, and although legions of international fans had speculated on a new album, keeping a keen eye on the website… it too, had gone dark.

It has been now for nearly 12 years, the website is now changed into simply a generic marketing website.

Sadly, in September 2025, Nicky Ryan, a noted creator and producer in his own right, passed away at the age of 79, leaving behind his wife, Roma and two children. He had been a vital part of everything relative to Enya’s unique sound.

Just 7 months later, in April 2026, Eithne and Roma would say goodbye to Eithne’s sister and world renowned vocalist, Maire, who had been a long-time member of Clannad. She died at the age of 73.

Eithne, now 65, and Roma, now 76, survive as an incomplete group, and neither want to carry own without the late Nicky, understandably. Each member of the trio had long been clear that if anything happened to one of them, the project called “Enya” would no longer exist.

And now, this is where fans and appreciative audiences find themselves as they collectively bid adieu to the group that shaped an entire genre and wove itself beyond music and into the fabric of music culture with instant name recognition. Enya, a trio of notable queer icons by way of their inspiring lyrics, elegant, high fashion, sometimes campy, persona through Eithne, and their mystifying lifestyle and personal relationships behind the gates of Manderley Castle castle on the Irish sea, kept eager fans desperate to know more in a world of tell-everything social media- but the gates remained closed. None of the member of Enya ever spoke about their private lives, or the anatomy of their interpersonal relationships. That detachment- that lack of interest in celebrity- only made people more curious… if not certainly more fascinated by the mysterious trio.

Earlier this year, fans noticed that the former trio’s famed Aigle Studio had shuttered its doors and officially dissolved as a registered business, having filed no information since 2020 to operate, according to official registration documents. This brought on the brutal realization:

Enya is no more.

Like one of their rich and soothing songs, Enya disappeared quietly into the shadows leaving us with a 40 year-long tableau of music.
