may it be

a poem

my nation is broken

and maybe it’s always been

but once I thought

of a slow march to justice

those were martin luther’s words,

the king of civil rights

but which republic are we in

and which war do we fight?

i don’t care anymore

about my nation

the stars and stripes

are stars and bars

with another name

rank with injustice

and property rights

inhumane

my heart breaks for injustice

cries out against oppression

weeps for the broken

and the immigrant

enslaved by the corporation

my soul begs the Lord

what does it all matter

anymore

my God, the unveiling

of men’s hearts

i don’t care anymore

what death fills the streets

where comes the justice

truth and righteousness

and what would mlk say

and his namesake

if they walked the streets

today?

my nation is broken

and always has been

a child of empires

married to enlightenment

selfishness reigns supreme

as men line their wallets

forcing child brides

to preen

this land is my home

this land is my love

my God commands my allegiance

i no longer love the flag

His Kingdom

His road

not mine

or the constitution’s

i truly don’t care

what nation exists

except it be one

of truth

and love,

justice

and righteousness…

…amen
