Scary Movie Tuesdays: Scary Movie 4

When the Parody Machine Hits Its Stride

By the time Scary Movie 4 arrived, the franchise had fully transitioned into its post-Wayans era. With David Zucker back in the director’s chair, the series continued leaning into rapid-fire gags, deadpan delivery, and a more structured spoof style introduced in Scary Movie 3.

The result is a film that feels more confident in its identity — even if that identity is throwing as many jokes at the wall as possible and seeing what sticks.

The Setup: Invasions, Curses, and iPods

Once again, Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) finds herself caught in a bizarre mix of paranormal chaos and global catastrophe. This time, she’s working as a caretaker for a mysterious old woman while uncovering a deadly curse involving a strange videotape.

Yes, the ghostly long-haired child is back, continuing the parody of The Grudge and The Ring.

But that’s only half the story.

Elsewhere, Tom Ryan (Craig Bierko) is dealing with alien tripods rising from the ground and laying waste to humanity, in a direct spoof of War of the Worlds. Naturally, these plotlines collide in a way that makes absolutely no sense — and that’s exactly the point.

The Cast: A Comedy Free-for-All

Returning favorites Cindy and Brenda (Regina Hall) once again anchor the film, with Hall continuing to be one of the most consistently funny parts of the entire franchise.

The supporting cast, however, is where Scary Movie 4 really goes off the rails — in a good way.

You’ve got Leslie Nielsen back as the clueless President, delivering lines with the kind of seriousness that makes them even funnier. Bill Pullman pops in for a surreal parody of his more dramatic roles, while Shaquille O’Neal and Dr. Phil McGraw show up in cameos that feel like fever dreams.

It’s a stacked, chaotic ensemble that perfectly matches the film’s anything-goes energy.

The Humor: Blink and You’ll Miss It

Like its predecessor, Scary Movie 4 thrives on speed.

The jokes come fast — sometimes so fast that if one doesn’t land, another is already on the way to replace it. The film pulls heavily from early-2000s horror and sci-fi, including Saw, The Village, and even a bit of Million Dollar Baby for good measure.

Some gags are clever, others are absurd, and a few are so random they circle back around to being funny. It’s not as sharp as Scary Movie 3, but it maintains that same commitment to structured parody over pure gross-out humor.

The Reception: Still Standing Strong

Released by Dimension Films in April 2006, Scary Movie 4 continued the franchise’s box office success, earning $178 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.

Critics once again gave mixed reviews, but by this point, the expectations were clear: you weren’t here for high art — you were here for chaos.

And the film delivers exactly that.

The Legacy: The End of the Classic Run

Scary Movie 4 marks the end of what many consider the “core” era of the franchise. While it would be followed years later by Scary Movie 5, that installment would arrive without many of the key creative voices and tonal consistency established in parts 3 and 4.

In many ways, this feels like the last time the series truly knew what it was.

Final Verdict: Controlled Chaos Done Right

Scary Movie 4 doesn’t reinvent the formula, but it refines it.

It’s less about shocking the audience and more about overwhelming them — with jokes, references, and sheer ridiculousness. Not every gag works, but enough do to make it an entertaining ride.

If Scary Movie 3 was the course correction, Scary Movie 4 is the follow-through: a fast, silly, and self-aware parody that knows exactly what kind of movie it is — and doesn’t pretend to be anything more.

For Scary Movie Tuesdays, that’s more than enough.
