Beyond the Four Walls of University : Restoring Hope Through Skills With Young and Empowered Malawi

How 58 Girls Defied the Odds in Malawi

When we think of graduation ceremonies, our minds often drift to the quiet, academic dignity of university halls. We picture structured lines, polite applause, and the familiar sense of institutional achievement.

But on this Saturday , 20th June 2026 at Legacy Lodge in Lunzu, I witnessed a graduation that was spectacularly different.

It was loud. It was raw. It was filled with the blare of vuvuzelas, piles of heartfelt gifts, tears of relief, and an overwhelming surge of community joy. It wasn’t just a ceremony; it was a defiant celebration of resilience. As a Board Director for Young and Empowered Malawi, being part of this day reminded me exactly why practical skills are the ultimate tool for changing a young person’s economic destiny.

Here is how a single, unforgettable day unfolded.

10:00 PM– Personal Touches Friday Evening

The day started early. Before the noise of the crowds and the music took over, I wanted to ensure that every single girl knew she was seen as an individual, not just a statistic in a program.

I went to get personalized cards printed for each graduate. Sitting down with them, mind you my Chichewa(Local Malawian Language) is quite terrible to let’s say . . . non — existent ! Haha . I typed some words of encouragement on each one , in English and Chichewa, with of course help in translation. These cards were meant to have personalized words of encouragement or well wishes from the teachers, directors etc.

They had done the hard work of building their foundation, and these cards were a small reminder that they now have a community standing firmly behind them.

These were to be printed on Friday morning at one of my favourite local printing shops, in the busy city of Blantyre. Quite affordable and cheap, service?… I would say one of the best so far ! I can’t complain- Sparc Printers. It has a laundry section in the same room, so how convenient too.

BUMMER! -I am usually a very well planned type of person, I had my Friday evening planned and that was to get prepared for Saturday. Unfortunately the printing shop had run out paper for the cards and I had to wait till Saturday morning, as anxious as I was ; He assured me by morning they would be ready.

And indeed they were ready as promised!

01:30 PM – Arriving in Lunzu: A Community Mobilizes

Driving into Lunzu and arriving at Legacy Lodge, the atmosphere was already electric. The sheer volume of people who turned up was staggering. Families didn't just show up; they brought the entire village’s energy with them! The visuals of it all could get your eyes watery! It brought me to the time I stood in my graduation gown in Windhoek ,Namibia for the first time !Oh what a nostalgic feeling! ,My mother could not be more proud, and I couldn’t be happier to make her proud.

To understand why this turnout was so emotional, you have to understand the stakes.

The 58 girls graduating had applied to the program to learn fashion & design, braiding, and cosmetology. Along the way, many of their peers dropped out due to harsh environmental pressures, financial strains, or early pregnancies, family responsibilities etc. Prior to that some had dropped out of Secondary school entirely; others had hit a wall after failing their Form 4 exams.

Society often writes these girls off. But these 58 stood resilient. Seeing their parents arrive in numbers proved that when you give a young woman a second chance, an entire community rallies around her.

Our MC Lovemore was one of the first students when the program started years ago. He did an incredible job holding the room together, speaking with effortless confidence and seamlessly filling every gap in the program.

03:00 PM – Confidence on Display

Before the certificates were even handed out, the graduates took over the stage.

Some danced in groups, some sang, and others took the spotlight entirely alone. Watching them perform, I was struck by the sheer level of confidence on display! They were elated.

03:45 PM – Caught Completely Off Guard

Then came the moment that shattered whatever emotional composure I had left.

Completely unscripted and unprepared, myself, our co-founder Dorothy Kamoto, and my fellow board members were called up to the stage to hand out the certificates. It caught me completely off guard!

As the girls walked up, the room erupted. I found myself shedding tears as parents tightly hugged us in pure gratitude.

The highlight of my entire day was watching one proud father. The moment his daughter’s name was called, he literally leaped out of his seat and danced his way all the way to the stage. He couldn't contain his joy, and honestly, neither could we. He danced all the way down with another gentleman , I would assume this had to be the young girl’s uncle. What a beautiful moment it was.

Another amongst many families I would highlight came in with a huge banner ! Personalized for this moment in time.

04:00 PM – Launchpads, Not Just Endings

A graduation is a conclusion, but for these girls, it is a launchpad.

Thanks to available funding, Young and Empowered was able to gift some of the girls sewing machines and blow dryers as start-up kits. They aren't just going home with a piece of paper; they are going home as business owners.

We were also deeply privileged to have Dr. Bruce Main, the Founder of Urban Promise International, plan to join us for this milestone. Having leaders of that caliber witness the raw potential of Malawian youth is a testament to the growth of this vision.

As someone deeply passionate about fighting unemployment and driving job creation in Malawi, this day reinforced my core belief: Skills are a powerful weapon against poverty. These girls are motivated, skilled, and ready to take on the world.

How You Can Help

We have managed to create hope for someone, but the journey doesn't stop here. There are many more girls waiting for a chance to rewrite their stories.

To the coordinators, teachers, staff ,donors and Executive Director behind Young and Empowered congratulations on this milestone!

As we celebrated these remarkable young women, I was reminded of

Proverbs 22:29:

‘Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.’

Through determination, resilience, and the acquisition of practical skills, these graduates are positioning themselves to build businesses, create opportunities, and shape a brighter future for themselves and their communities.”
