You track temperature. You log humidity. Your readings look fine.
But walk through your storage area. See yellowing paper edges? Brittle bindings? Rust on metal shelving? That musty smell?

The Problem Nobody Monitors
Paper, wood, and textiles release acidic compounds as they age. Urban pollution adds sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. A standard dehumidifier pulls moisture from the air — but leaves these corrosive gases circulating. They concentrate in the drier air and attack your collections.
The 5-Point Audit
1. Visual inspection. Yellowing edges, brittle bindings, rust, mold spots, chemical odors. Any of these = acid damage, regardless of your humidity readings.
2. Air testing. A portable VOC/SO₂ monitor costs under $200. If VOCs exceed 500 ppb or SO₂ exceeds 20 ppb, you need filtration.
3. HVAC check. MERV 8–13 filters capture dust, not gases. SO₂ and NOₓ pass through. You need activated carbon or alkaline media.

5. Fix the root cause. Dehumidification alone isn’t enough. You need a system that neutralizes acids — not just removes moisture.
