Our family tree — and the DNA results that accompany it — reveal something astonishing: four ancient civilizations intersect in a single Powhatan lineage. Sanskrit, Hebrew, Japanese, and Korean heritage appear not as distant curiosities, but as threads woven directly into the Morris–Miles family of Powhatan, Virginia.
This is not merely a story of genetics — it is a story of names, migration, language, and identity resurfacing through centuries.
Sanskrit
My 3rd great-grandfather from Macon, Powhatan County bore the given name Vival, or विवल् in Sanskrit — a term meaning “to turn away”.
According to Sanskrit dictionaries, Vival (विवल्) is related to the Prakrit word Vivala, and historically appears in Indo-Aryan linguistic roots.
Hebrew
My 5th and 6th great-grandfather is Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence. Multiple DNA studies — including my own Y-chromosome match — point toward Jefferson’s rare paternal haplogroup, T-M70, a lineage most commonly found today in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain & Portugal) and Egypt.
Harold and Ashton Morris, along with the President’s rare paternal haplogroup T-M70, have an eclectic mix of DNA signatures, as reported by 23andMe, which are: Spanish & Portuguese, Egyptian, and Northern Indian & Pakistani.
Interestingly, surnames tied to us — such as Morris — appear in 19th-century Virginia attached to Hebrew-derived given names like Hyram, especially in places like Jefferson, Virginia.
Japanese & Korean
I also hail from the Miles family of Virginia — twice — through both of my grandparents Geraldine and Arthur Morris of Macon, Powhatan, Virginia.

Miles is a common Powhatan Indian surname found in the Powhatan Confederacy — and the Pamunkey, the Chickahominy, and Mattaponi tribes three historical Powhatan Confederacy subtribes and, now, federally recognized independent Native American tribes.
DNA samples from a Miles of Virginia reveal measurable traces of Japanese and Korean origin, a finding that initially seems improbable within a colonial-era Virginia context. Yet when mapped onto migrations, indentured servitude records, and the complexity of mixed Native communities in the East, these signals become part of a larger, global Powhatan tapestry.
