Something Bigger for Behn?

Aftyn Behn won’t run for Congress . . . this year

The Tennessee progressive Democrat who gave hope to Democrats nationwide by turning a Trump +22 congressional district into a single-digit race in a December 2025 Special Election will not run for the seat again this year.

In an email to supporters, Behn explained the race had taken a personal toll. As a result, she will remain in the Tennessee General Assembly and seek re-election to her Nashville-based seat.

She also said there’s more in store, including the launch of a new political organization focused on the essential organizing work needed to shift the political winds in Tennessee.

Looking ahead, we plan to honor our campaign commitments while transitioning the campaign committee into an organizing project called Unrigged, which will support my organizing work in Tennessee

Behn then teased a run for higher office:

“… as I spend the next few years building the coalition I need to run for an even higher office.”

It’s not clear what “even higher” office Behn may seek.

It is clear that in 2030, Tennessee will have races for U.S. Senate and Governor.

Behn’s existing network and strong 2025 campaign showing would certainly make her a solid entry into either race.

Of course, it is possible a Democrat could win the Governor’s race this year.

Behn’s announcement clears the way for another Democrat to take on the challenge of the 7th District U.S. House race this year.

It also creates excitement, as progressives in Tennessee look forward to Behn’s next steps — from organizing to winning elections.
