Why Did Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Forbid Drinking Water While Standing? A Scientific Perspective
Why Did Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Forbid Drinking Water While Standing? A Scientific Perspective

"Sometimes, the smallest habits reveal the deepest wisdom."
We spend a surprising amount of time thinking about what we should eat. We compare diets, count calories, and search for the healthiest foods. Yet almost no one asks a much simpler question:
Does the way we drink water matter?
For many people, drinking a glass of water is an automatic action. We grab a bottle, take a few quick sips while walking, and move on with our day. It feels normal.
More than 1,400 years ago, however, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Muslims something different. He advised them not to drink water while standing.
At first glance, this may sound like nothing more than a rule of etiquette. But the more we learn about the human body and the importance of mindful habits, the more interesting this guidance becomes.
In an authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said:
«"None of you should drink while standing." (Sahih Muslim)»
The question is not whether modern science can "prove" every Sunnah. Faith does not depend on laboratory experiments. But science can sometimes help us appreciate the wisdom behind practices that Muslims have followed for centuries.
More Than a Glass of Water
When people hear about this Sunnah, they often search for dramatic scientific explanations. Claims such as "it damages the kidneys" or "it causes arthritis" are common on social media.
The problem is that these claims are not supported by strong scientific evidence.
That does not make the Sunnah any less meaningful. Instead, it encourages us to separate verified science from internet myths.
A Calm Body Works Better
Think about how you usually drink water when you are sitting.
You are more likely to slow down. You take smaller sips. Your breathing is calmer, and your body is more relaxed.
Modern physiology tells us that when we are relaxed, the parasympathetic nervous system—often called the "rest and digest" system—becomes more active. This system supports digestion and many normal body functions.
Drinking water while sitting naturally fits into this relaxed state.
The Science of Slowing Down
Health experts today often talk about mindful hydration.
The idea is simple:
Drink slowly.
Avoid rushing.
Pay attention to your body's signals.
Stay present instead of drinking mindlessly while walking or working.
Although this concept has become popular only in recent years, the habit itself is remarkably similar to what Islam has encouraged for centuries.
A Sunnah of Balance
The Prophet ﷺ did not only teach Muslims to sit while drinking.
He also taught them to begin with "Bismillah," drink in three breaths, avoid breathing into the vessel, and thank Allah after finishing.
Taken together, these practices encourage patience, gratitude, and mindfulness—qualities that modern psychology also associates with healthier daily habits.
Faith Comes Before Science
As Muslims, we do not follow the Sunnah because science approves of it.
We follow it because we trust Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
Science changes. New discoveries are made every year. What is accepted today may be revised tomorrow.
The teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, however, have guided millions of people for more than fourteen centuries.
When scientific research happens to point toward benefits of a Sunnah, it strengthens our appreciation. But even when science has not yet found an explanation, the value of the Sunnah remains unchanged.
Final Thoughts
Perhaps the greatest lesson here is not simply about sitting or standing.
It is about slowing down.
Being mindful.
Showing gratitude.
And realizing that even the smallest actions in our daily lives can become acts of worship when they follow the example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Sometimes, true wisdom is not found in doing extraordinary things.
It is found in doing ordinary things the way the Prophet ﷺ taught us.
"Faith comes first. Science is not the foundation of Islam—but when it uncovers the wisdom behind a Sunnah, it reminds us that divine guidance never loses its relevance."
