The Exit is the Swindle

What you were sold as the prize is the moment you lose everything you built it for

For four decades, the architecture of global capitalism has been optimised for a single outcome: the upward concentration of value. From workers to shareholders. From communities to platforms. From the many to the few. The result is visible in stagnant wages, hollowed-out communities, captured governments, and a political landscape so distorted by narrative manipulation that populations consistently vote against their own material interests.

This was not inevitable. It was a choice. In 1973, Milton Friedman published a doctrine: the sole purpose of a business is to maximise returns to shareholders. Everything else, the worker, the community, the long-term health of the enterprise itself, was reclassified as a cost. Governments adopted it. Business schools taught it. Boards enforced it. And the world you see around you is the direct, measurable result.

Here is what that doctrine did to business itself.

The average lifespan of a company on the S&P 500 was 60 years in the 1950s. Today it is under 20. Founders who built something real watched it be acquired, restructured, and dissolved by investors whose horizon was the next quarter. Products that served communities were discontinued because they didn’t optimise the margin. Companies that could have compounded for generations were sacrificed for a single exit event. Shareholder primacy didn’t just harm communities. It consumed the enterprises that adopted it.

The exit, the IPO, the acquisition, these are not the prize at the end of the journey. They are the moment you hand your life’s work to people whose interests are structurally misaligned with everything you built it for.

The 4th Way is built on a different premise.

Not that profit is wrong. That extraction is self-defeating. An enterprise that circulates value among the people who create it, is owned by those who use and build it, and makes decisions based on long-term health rather than short-term sentiment, is not a compromise. It is a structurally superior model. It is how capitalism worked before the Friedman Doctrine. It retains its founders. It keeps its governance. It builds trust with the communities it serves rather than extracting from them. And it participates in a network that actively routes opportunity, relationships, and resources toward aligned members.

The Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy has operated this model for over a century. It is one of the wealthiest regions in Italy. It has lower unemployment, higher wages, and greater social cohesion than any comparable region organised around conventional shareholder capitalism. Its cooperative enterprises survived the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID pandemic, and every recession in between, without a single compulsory redundancy. This is not ideology. It is evidence.

The 4th Way is a connective layer for enterprises that have made this structural choice.

Not a protest. Not a political position. A network that finds, names, links, and amplifies the businesses, communities, and individuals already building a horizontal economy, one where value circulates among those who create it rather than flowing toward those who merely extract it.

We are looking for partners who are building something that belongs here. Not investors seeking an exit. Not organisations planning to scale toward acquisition or public listing. Partners who have decided, as a structural commitment rather than a marketing position, that their enterprise exists to circulate value rather than extract it.

This matters because of what it rules out.

A company that begins as an ethical alternative and then lists on a stock exchange has not evolved. It has changed sides. The moment shareholder primacy enters the governance structure, the extraction logic follows, regardless of the founders’ intentions. The architecture determines the outcome. It always does.

The 4th Way cannot maintain its integrity as a network if its nodes are moving in opposite directions. A partner that chooses an extractive exit does not lose our respect. They lose their place in the network. The two things are structurally incompatible, and pretending otherwise would make the 4th Way another well-intentioned project that became what it opposed.

What is in it for you is precisely this.

You keep what you built. You govern it on your own terms. You compound value in the right direction across decades rather than surrendering it at a single exit event. You join a network of aligned enterprises that trade with one another, refer to one another, and support one another against the pressures that isolate and destroy good businesses operating alone.

And you become part of demonstrating, concretely and visibly, that the alternative works. That a business does not have to choose between integrity and longevity. That the Friedman doctrine was not an economic law. It was a decision. And decisions can be unmade.

If you are building something designed to last, designed to return value to the communities it serves, designed to be owned by those who use and build it rather than by those who merely finance it, and more importantly, designed to give you financial freedom rather than slavery, then you are already part of what we are assembling.

I appreciate your feedback and comments
