The Talking Donkey: An Intriguing Biblical Story

In the Book of Numbers, Balaam, a prophet, is approached by Balak, the king of Moab, who is fearful of the Israelites encamped near his land. The Israelites had recently defeated several neighboring nations, and Balak seeks to protect his kingdom by hiring Balaam to curse the Israelites. Initially, Balaam seeks God’s will and refuses to go with Balak’s messengers. However, when Balak sends more prestigious envoys and promises greater rewards, Balaam consults God again. This time, God permits Balaam to go but with strict instructions to only speak what He commands.

Balaam’s Journey

The next morning, Balaam saddles his donkey and sets out with the princes of Moab. However, God is angered by Balaam’s intentions, and the angel of the Lord is sent to block his path. Balaam does not see the angel, but the donkey does. As Balaam rides, the donkey sees the angel standing in the road with a drawn sword and veers off into a field. Balaam, unaware of the angel’s presence, strikes the donkey to get it back on the path.

The angel appears a second time as they continue through a narrow path between vineyard walls. The donkey, seeing the angel, presses against the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot. Balaam strikes the donkey again in frustration. The angel of the Lord then moves to a third position, where the path is so narrow there is no way to turn. The Donkey Speaks

At this moment, the Lord opens the donkey’s mouth, and it speaks to Balaam, saying, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” Balaam, in his anger and shock, replies, “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” The donkey responds, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” Balaam admits, “No.”

Then the Lord opens Balaam’s eyes, and he sees the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword. Balaam bows low and falls facedown. The angel of the Lord asks Balaam, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it.”

Balaam, realizing the gravity of the situation, says to the angel, “I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.” The angel of the Lord tells Balaam to continue but to speak only what he is commanded to speak.
