Sorry. There hasn’t been any news that caught my interest this week. Currently, there has been a significant decrease in news regarding mobility in Korea, particularly concerning autonomous driving technology. However, as Korean TNC companies are preparing for autonomous driving services, I expect related news to be released soon. That said, there is a question regarding who the partner for those services will be.

You can often hear the expressions First, Middle, and Last Mile in supply chain transportation systems. These terms also frequently appear in freight transport. Currently, autonomous freight trucks usually handle the First mile, while delivery robots can be considered the Last mile. Naturally, there must also be autonomous vehicles that handle the Middle mile.
In fact, autonomous driving technology has been developed across the entire movement process for the initial transport of goods. Among these, the areas that received the most attention were the First and Last miles. The First mile focused on freight trucks moving mainly on highways, largely because there are fewer obstacles during transport. In the case of delivery robots for the Last mile, many startups took on the challenge because they have a simple implementation structure, which lowered the barrier to entry. However, the Middle mile involves relatively complex driving on public roads and requires medium-duty freight trucks, so it did not receive as much attention as the First and Last miles. Perhaps for this reason, many companies developing Middle mile autonomous driving technology have actually given up.
Among them, Gatik is a company that has managed to consistently develop technology and grow. They introduced Driverless autonomous freight trucks relatively early and have disclosed collaborations with major U.S. companies. To ensure a stable supply of freight trucks, Gatik received an investment from Isuzu, a Japanese freight truck manufacturer, laying the foundation for vehicle supply for full-scale mass production. They have also generated meaningful results by continuously conducting pilot runs with large corporations. Recently, the company announced a multi-year contract with PepsiCo for Diverless autonomous freight truck services. Through this collaboration, it can be said that the autonomous supply chain — based on the current Hub-to-Hub operational model of large autonomous freight trucks — is creating a connecting link.
The autonomous freight transport sector is already moving beyond the development of autonomous trucks and shifting its business model toward fleet management for service provision. To this end, companies are preparing to integrate autonomous fleets into their existing Fleet Management Systems (FMS). Consequently, news about the actual deployment of sector-specific autonomous technology by companies with massive supply chains is frequently being reported. It can be said that the role of autonomous driving technology in the future freight transport ecosystem is gradually taking shape.

▶ Gatik & PepsiCo: PepsiCo and Gatik Announce Multi-Year Agreement to Deploy Autonomous Freight in North America
PepsiCo and Gatik announced a multi-year strategic partnership to bring driverless freight into PepsiCo’s North America food and beverage supply chain, marking the largest commercial autonomous freight deployment to date. Today, Gatik is already operating driverless trucks for PepsiCo across Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas.
This marks a major commercial milestone for Gatik, which is now delivering autonomous freight at commercial scale inside one of the world’s largest and most demanding consumer goods supply chains.

PepsiCo and Gatik are focused on adding capacity where it’s needed most: high-demand regional networks that are hard to staff and critical to keeping shelves stocked for consumers. ▶ Karsan: Karsan continues to expand its autonomous technology from public transportation to airport
Karsan, the world’s technology-focused mobility brand in next-generation public transportation, has begun providing service with its Autonomous e-JEST as part of ATL Spoke, Atlanta’s first autonomous public transportation pilot project. Bringing Karsan’s expertise in autonomous mobility to North America, the project will also serve as part of the transportation solutions supporting passenger mobility in the city during the period when the world’s largest soccer tournament is held.
The ATL Spoke project, where the Autonomous e-JEST will carry out actual passenger transport, serves as a significant reference for the use of autonomous mobility in large-scale events. ▶ Toyota & Tier IV: Toyota backs Tier IV in level 4 autonomous vehicle push
Toyota Motor has acquired a minority stake in Japanese autonomous driving startup Tier IV, pairing the investment with a memorandum of understanding on technology collaboration.
The acquisition, made through Toyota subsidiary Toyota Invention Partners, amounts to a 1% holding valued at an estimated Y1bn ($6.2m).
Under the terms of the partnership, Toyota intends to integrate Tier IV’s technology into its e-Palette electric vehicle to achieve Level 4 autonomous driving capability by fiscal 2027.
