The 52-Week Photography Project — August

August 2026 edition

Not my yacht. However, all photos are mine.

August arrived and, true to family tradition, I’m “a day late and a dollar short.” My mother used that line whenever life outran her by half a step, and it feels right for a month that got away on me.

So I’m catching up the best way I know how: with a photo essay that starts in the kind of heat you can taste. Rob at Kulabear’s submission inspired me to finally finish my August photo essay.

33-Some Like it Hot

The first theme, Some Like It Hot, comes straight from a sweltering fall evening on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. The evening sky is flushed, the air heavy, the whole shoreline shimmering like it had its own pulse. You can feel the temperature just by looking at the sky.

The Promenade is always a great place for an evening stroll. Just grab an ice cream cone and meander.

34-The Tourist

“Why, why, why, Delilah?”

Nothing compares with the feeling of being slightly out of place; sun‑dazed, overheated, and moving through someone else’s city with wide‑eyed curiosity. And what better way to capture that than a photo of tourists being gloriously, unmistakably themselves.

This shot came from the Nice metro after a Rugby World Cup match at the Allianz Riviera in 2023, where the Wales supporters had emptied enough beer cups to turn the tram ride back into town into a rolling choir.

Wales, “The Land of Song,” is known for its choirs. Forty minutes of swaying, laughing, and belting out rugby standards, including “Delilah,” which they treat less like a song and more like an anthem.

Packed shoulder to shoulder, everyone glowing from the match and the Mediterranean heat, it was tourism in its purest form: strangers briefly united by sport, sweat, and the kind of singing that doesn’t care who’s listening.

35-Nightshift

There goes Tokyo… or, Nice.

Some cities come alive at night because of their people; Nice does it with its creatures. Not the human kind, the sculptural kind.

For Night Shift, I landed on one of Orlinski’s massive gorillas, part of his “Wild Kong” series, standing in Place Masséna like it’s about to clock in for the late shift. This yellow beast looks moments away from heaving something straight onto the unsuspecting strollers below. The whole square glows around it: the lit figures perched on their poles, the patterned tiles, the hum of people drifting through the warm air. It’s theatrical, a little ridiculous, and exactly the kind of scene that makes you stop and take a picture.

Nice had a red gorilla guarding the airport grounds, as if to warn arriving passengers that the city has a sense of humor.

36-Complicated

Only one spot on the entire divider got it right!

Airports are already complicated places, full of gates, languages, time zones, and people who look like they’ve been awake for days.

But the International Lounge in Montréal adds its own twist: a honeycombed partition that seems designed to provoke questions after a glass or two of complimentary wine.

I sat there staring at it, wondering aloud (I’m fairly certain it was aloud) why on earth there were four coloured hexagons. Four. Nature practically rolls its eyes at even numbers. Bees would never! Fibonacci would file a complaint! Three, five, seven — those are numbers that grow the way patterns want to grow. But four?

Only one spot on the entire divider got it right. And that tiny disruption made the whole thing delightfully complicated. The kind of puzzle you only notice when you’re between flights, way beyond tired, slightly tipsy, and open to the idea that even a wall can be a conversation starter.

And there you have it! A month of heat, crowds, creatures, and curious patterns. All of it slightly off‑kilter, slightly over‑bright, and exactly what makes late summer feel alive. Thank you, as always, Rodrigo S-C.
