There are two northbound trains on the red metro line with two different destinations: one to Beitou (R22) and the other to Tamsui (R28).

If you want to take a direct train, please check the signal boards at the platform before boarding the train. Once the train bound for Beitou arrives at Beitou, it immediately becomes a southbound train and travels back to where you just came from.
I’ve helped out quite a few groups on the train who wanted to visit Tamsui but got on the train for Beitou instead and traveled southbound again.
The train to Tamsui is usually busier so I typically take the train bound for Beitou (R22), then transfer to the train bound for Tamsui at Qiyan(R21) on the same platform if I visit Tamsui. You’d have to change platforms if you transfer at Beitou station. Qiyan is about a 20-minute ride from Taipei Main Station.
