Exploring the Rhine Pt 5— Upper Rhine Pt 3 -the Huningue Canal

This is getting interesting, so this canal is smaller, starts from Huningue, now a suburb of Basel, slightly further south than the Grand Canal d’Alsace, check out I marked up the map with the blue line.

Then, from Kembs-Loechlé it runs north to this place called Niffer where it meets up with another canal. Check out my marked up snip below.

Okay let’s get into this Huningue canal. Wikipedia doesn’t say much on the subject, quick google search leads to a website the Regio Greenbelt, ooh interesting it highlights cool nature spots around the Basel region. Anyway it says the Huningue canal was built between 1824 and 1834 to connect Mulhouse, wherever that is, and Huningue.

So what I’m thinking is that this canal was used for a while for navigation and shipping, but then when the Grand Canal d’Alsace was built, rendering it unnecessary. The Huningue canal became obselete and now it’s pretty much just a nature spot, a scenic cycling and rambling route.

And I was right! Love it — map nerd for the win.

Let’s see if I can find a nice picture of the canal.

I found another website called Grokipedia (?) which goes into a lot more detail.

Apparently the Huningue Canal links up to the Rhone-Rhine canal?! Oooh this is exciting, I didn’t know there was a Rhone-Rhine canal. So that’s the canal at Niffer. Oooh we’ll get there. Oh that reminds me, I did a geography detective thing cos the Rhone and Rhine river sources seem to be very close, I wanted to see how close, that’s on the article list.

Anyway, so where is Mulhouse? A few miles east of Niffer and the Rhine, check out the snip below.

Oooh Mulhouse is a city, look how pretty! I wanna go.
