Why the Calorie Is Only Half the Story
Nutrition advice has been stuck on a single question for decades: how many calories? The evidence shows that the question, on its own, misses the most important part of how food actually works in the body.
Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats each deliver energy but serve fundamentally different functions. Carbohydrates are the brain’s primary fuel and the body’s dominant energy source during intense activity. Proteins are not an energy source at all under normal conditions. They build and repair tissue through amino acids, and the body only burns them for fuel when carbohydrate and fat intake fall short. Fats produce hormones, construct cell membranes, and enable the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K. Without dietary fat, vitamin E absorption drops to roughly 10%. With fat present, it rises to nearly 60%.

The ratio between these three macronutrients shapes metabolic outcomes in ways calorie counting cannot capture. Research found that individuals whose metabolism favours carbohydrate burning over fat burning face a 2.5 fold increased risk of gaining at least 5kg compared to those who preferentially burn fat. Same calorie intake, different weight trajectory, determined by macronutrient partitioning.
None of these macronutrients functions optimally without micronutrient support either. B vitamins convert food into ATP. Iron carries oxygen. A study found that combining low-dose protein with micronutrient supplementation during resistance exercise increased muscle mass in older adults more effectively than either approach alone.
The useful framework is not calories-in versus calories-out. It is understood that what you eat determines how your body uses it. That distinction changes outcomes at every level.
