The Bound Shadow (Chapter Six)

Bond across Minds

Elara and Raelith entered a deadly shadow‑filled forest, where an uprising of shadow creatures triggered a desperate surge of magic through their bond. The power saves them but exposes their thoughts, desires, and fears to each other. Though Raelith insists nothing has changed and demands secrecy, Elara knows the bond has evolved into something dangerous and intimate, altering them both as they continue toward their unknown destination.

New to the story? Start with Chapter One here.

As they made camp, emotional cracks were starting to show in both of them. And try as they might, they couldn’t separate each other’s thoughts inside their minds.

Through the overhanging branches, Elara gazed up at the constellations and planets above, noticing they were unlike those from her home world. It was an alien landscape, and she felt for the first time completely cut off from the what’s she knew.

Equally estranged was the mind of Raelith, who had thoughts which were almost incomprehensible at times. Often, his mind would go back to the training he had endured upon entering this world.

He hadn’t started off as the shadow master by any stretch of the imagination; he’d had to go through various stages to get there. Humiliated to the point where he was broken several times, the humanness was slowly cut out of him.

She knew, despite this, the scarring hadn’t completely unchanged him. There was a tenderness he had towards her that he tried to deny, but it was there, and in moments it would come through, and the world around them would soften.

The atmosphere of the camp was claustrophobic, ironic as they were completely out in the open. There was a massive vulnerability between them in the shared space, as they both tried to block the other person’s mind out from their own, but it was futile, as the power of the connection between them was too strong.

There were even points during the evening where they were they both were unsure who was controlling their bodies and where their minds resided. The flicker of the fire reminded them of the fragility of things and how easily they could be consumed by something more powerful than themselves.

Was there truly another consciousness inside the bond that had a controlling force over both of their minds?

“I’m becoming fearful about what is happening to us,” Elara said after they lay down.

“You feared losing control; I understand that. But what do you think is happening to me? I’ve been a ruler of the shadows for centuries in your world. Now, it’s all come tumbling down; it seems like I’m the enemy of the shadows rather than the person who’s in charge of them.” His mind was locked in a permanent state of confusion.

“We are both losing physical control over our bodies. But not only that, it’s the emotional and spiritual side that is starting to disappear. I’m no longer sure who I am, and I only have a vague idea of what happened before I came here.” Elara’s voice was full of despair.

“My memory is also weakening. It’s as if something is taking over my whole body. At first, I thought it was you, but now I come to realize it’s something else. There’s something in the tether that is trying to control me. I’m trying to fight it, but it’s in my hands, my body, and even my thoughts.

“You were right to leave the shadow keep. I had no idea things would become like this. Unable to figure out where we came from and who I am. If we were still there, then there would be no chance to stop the thing that has bonded us.”

“There were some defenses there to stop these sorts of magical attacks, but I think it would have only delayed the inevitable, we would have been completely taken over by whatever it is.” Raelith’s voice wavered a little with emotion.

“Is it a being? Is it an entity? What do you think it is?” Elara said with an equally worried tone.

“It is something that is not from this world. I sense it is covering itself, so I cannot see if it’s a demon or some kind of devil.”

“I feel my life is unravelling. I’m losing control, and that has been my armor against people trying to harm me. I feel like my guard is down, and there’s nothing I can do to stop the pain that has been inflicted on me. Pain that has the intent of driving me insane and taking over my mind.” Elara reflected.

“We have to be strong and just hold out for a few more days, and then maybe we have a chance of breaking this bond,” Raelith said.

“I once went to your world and caused a lot of devastation. A battle so intense that hundreds were killed, with my shadow army taking over and taking back their souls to this world.” Raelith reflected as he, too, watched the night sky.

“I was victorious, and my triumph lasted for a long time. It gave me the idea that I was an unstoppable force. But this bond keeps on playing those memories back inside my mind.”

“I no longer think it’s a good thing that I’ve ended so many lives. The people were innocent, and you barely had a chance against us. I feel shame and guilt. I’m not a shadow anymore; I’m human like you,” he confided.

For the first time, she saw him break his stoic exterior, crumpled, his back bent, and his hands were over his face.

She comforted him, and once again there was a buzzing between them. This time, they felt each other’s aura pass through the bond, almost battling with it, until finally they reached each other, and then there was a humming noise in the ears, and a sense of goodwill warmed them.

“You know that I have emotions inside me that I thought had been extinguished. But being with you, I have felt things that I never desired, hope, tenderness, all these things I’ve been fighting to stop from taking over my mind.”

“I’ve been having a double battle between the bond itself and the emotions that it’s resurrecting within my mind. I don’t know what is happening, maybe it’s been close to you, but there’s a psychological resurrection that’s taking place inside me,” the dark soul he possessed was becoming a shard of light, Elara sensed.

It was just unsettling.

He felt her arm around his shoulder and drew closer.

It was a moment of tenderness between both of them, and he finally let himself go, and for a second, the bond was visible when a ray of light reflected between both of them.

The confession had created a bridge in the darkness of trust, and as they journeyed onwards from the break of dawn, small gestures were now visible between both of them. A new relationship was forming through eye contact, a hand lingering too long on as they touch inadvertently, but it was the unspoken understanding that they both had which was most important.

They had a shared vulnerability which brought them closer together as they realized they weren’t as different as they seemed.

The power of the bond grew heavy around them as they traveled, weighing them down, making them slower than before. But there was a new, almost joyful feeling inside them that now fought back against the creepy vine that tried to wrap itself around both of them.

Paradoxically, the thing that was trying to kill them was bringing them closer together. At that moment they could only wish they had enough time left to explore each other’s minds fully.
