When Hearts Break Like Storms.

Hurricanes are a nightmare, aren’t they? Even if they don’t hit directly, they still shake your sense of security. Florida has weathered countless storms from Mother Nature, and each year, we get a bit braver. Just a bit.
Heartbreak, in its own way can be a personal mini-hurricane. When a relationship ends, it can feel like a world is crumbling around you. Emotions can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to get caught up in the storm. Loss, anger, sadness, and confusion can create a whirlwind of emotions.
A friend and I were talking recently and he mentioned that the woman that he had been dating, who according to him was “quite full of herself”, had dumped him.
I told him I was really sorry to hear about the breakup, “It sucks, no doubt about it.” But it was tough to say exactly why things ended without knowing all the gory details. “Relationships are tricky like that. Sometimes they just run their course, and other times, well, people change.” Tried to cheer him up, but knew that he would continue to question himself for a while.
Let’s face it: getting dumped is the absolute worst. It’s like someone just unplugged your life and left you in the dark. One minute you’re cruising down Relationship Boulevard, feeling like the luckiest person alive, and the next you get news about a hurricane barreling in your direction. It’s like someone pulled the rug out from under you. But here’s the thing: just like a hurricane, this too shall pass.

When we first fall in love, we trust so deeply that we set ourselves up for a big fall. Love is blind, as they say. We want to trust someone because it feels good and makes life easier, but it also makes us vulnerable.
So why do we keep risking it? Because love is a gamble, and despite the pain, we crave it. Nobody wants to get dumped, but it’s part of life. How many of you have been dumped and felt like your world just ended? It’s a tough change, but it’s not the end.
Life is full of ups and downs. We fall, we get up, and we keep going. I once told my daughter, “If you’re going to get emotionally involved, be prepared to get emotionally uninvolved.” It’s part of the journey. When you hit rock bottom and feel worthless, remember it’s just a temporary emotion. Give yourself permission to grieve the loss of the relationship. But don’t let it consume you.
Like a community rebuilding after a hurricane, you can rebuild your life after heartbreak. It may look different than before, but it can be just as fulfilling, if not more so. Focus on what you can control, set realistic goals, and celebrate small victories along the way.
Focus on taking care of yourself. Eat well, get enough sleep, and try to incorporate some physical activity into your routine. It might be the last thing you want to do, but trust me, it helps. And don’t be afraid to reach out to friends and family for support.
Look in the mirror and remind yourself that you are unique and deserve happiness. Take risks, open yourself to new relationships, and believe in your worth. But what is life without a little risk? We have the power to overcome our negative self. We just need to DO IT!!
“Self-doubt is not an option! Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we often might gain by fearing to attempt.” — Shakespeare
