Whatever Happened to Colin O’Meara? A real Tintin mystery.
Colin O’Meara: The Voice of Tintin for a Generation

Colin O’Meara, the voice of Tintin for an entire generation, remains one of animation’s biggest mysteries.
Whatever Happened to Colin O’Meara?
Did you know Tintin was Canadian? Well, at least to me, he is. Whenever I read a Tintin story, I hear one voice: Colin O’Meara from the 1991 The Adventures of Tintin animated series produced by Ellipse and Nelvana. The Canadian actor brought the young reporter to life in a way that still sticks with many fans decades later. His delivery, sense of adventure, and calm confidence became inseparable from the character for an entire generation that grew up with the series.
In the modern era of social media, where actors, voice actors, and celebrities are often only a click away, Colin O’Meara has become something of a mystery. No convention appearances. No verified social media presence. No interviews revisiting his time as Tintin. For someone attached to such a beloved adaptation, his disappearance from the public eye has become increasingly fascinating to longtime fans.
O’Meara appears to have stepped away from acting around 2006 after a career that included television, voice acting, and stage work. Yet despite the continued popularity of Tintin worldwide, there has been very little public information regarding where he is today or whether he has any interest in revisiting the role that made such an impact on audiences.
Across online discussions and fan forums, many still consider Colin O’Meara the definitive voice of Tintin. While the character has been portrayed by several talented actors over the years — including Jamie Bell and Matthew Biddulph from Tintin: Cigars of the Pharaoh — O’Meara’s performance remains deeply tied to the character for fans who grew up during the 1990s. I’ve had the opportunity to speak with several actors connected to the world of Tintin over the years, including Matthew Biddulph. During our interview, I explained something that perfectly captures how different generations connect to the character. To my youngest son, Matthew is Tintin. He was the first voice my son ever heard attached to the famous boy reporter, and because of that, whenever my son reads a Tintin comic, that is the exact voice he hears in his head.
For me, however, as someone born in the 1980s and raised during the 1990s, Colin O’Meara will always be Tintin. That raises an interesting question: where did Colin O’Meara go?
Theory One: He Simply Wanted Privacy The most logical explanation is also the simplest. Colin O’Meara may have simply chosen to step away from public life. Not every actor wants to continue attending conventions, engaging with fandom culture, or maintaining a public presence after leaving the entertainment industry. It’s entirely possible he enjoys a quiet and private life somewhere in Canada and has no interest in revisiting his time in acting. If that is the case, it deserves respect. Public figures do not owe lifelong access to fans simply because they portrayed beloved characters. As much as I would love the opportunity to speak with him someday, privacy is still important, and stepping away from the spotlight is ultimately a personal decision.
Theory Two: He Has No Idea Fans Still Care Another strong possibility is that Colin O’Meara simply has no idea how much his portrayal still means to people. Throughout my career in journalism, I’ve encountered several actors and voice actors who were genuinely unaware of the impact their performances had on audiences. One of the biggest examples was my interview with Jay Goede, the voice of Mewtwo from Pokémon: The First Movie. Goede seemed surprised by how much that role still resonated with people who grew up in the 1990s. Over time, fans tracked him down online, rediscovered his work, and eventually encouraged him to begin appearing at conventions and reconnecting with audiences. There is a strong possibility the same could be true for Colin O’Meara. Without social media or a public-facing presence, he may simply be unaware that there are still Tintin fans discussing his performance online and journalists interested in hearing about his time on the series.
Theory Three: Colin O’Meara May Not Be His Real Name Another possibility is that “Colin O’Meara” may have been a stage name. Actors change names regularly for a variety of reasons, including union regulations, avoiding duplicate names within SAG, or separating different parts of their careers. One of the most famous examples is Michael Keaton, whose real name is actually Michael Douglas. He adopted the name Michael Keaton because another actor already had the name professionally. I’ve spoken with performers in the past who used alternate names for union and non-union work or changed names entirely after leaving the industry. If O’Meara eventually returned to using a birth name after stepping away from acting, that alone could explain why he has become difficult to locate publicly. It creates an interesting possibility: the voice of Tintin could simply be living an entirely ordinary life somewhere, unknown to the very fanbase that still remembers his performance so clearly.
Theory Four: The Possibility Nobody Wants to Consider The final theory, and the saddest one, is the possibility that Colin O’Meara may have passed away. To be clear, I found no evidence suggesting this is the case. However, when someone completely disappears from public life for nearly two decades, it inevitably becomes one of the possibilities people consider. Given that O’Meara had been acting since the mid-1980s, he would likely be in his 60s today. Again, there is absolutely no public information indicating this has happened. But it would explain the total absence of interviews, appearances, or online activity connected to him in recent years. Personally, I hope this theory is completely wrong. I would much rather believe that Colin O’Meara is simply out there somewhere living peacefully, unaware that generations of Tintin fans still remember his performance fondly. And maybe one day, the right opportunity will come along for him to revisit the role that left such a lasting impression on so many people.
This article exists for two reasons. First, out of genuine journalistic curiosity regarding where Colin O’Meara has been and what happened after his acting career. Second, because I genuinely believe that putting ideas into the world matters. Speaking with the actor who voiced Tintin for my generation would be a dream interview.
At the same time, this article is not an attempt to invade someone’s personal life or force a public appearance from someone who may not want one. If Colin O’Meara has intentionally chosen privacy, that decision deserves respect. I’ve never believed journalism should cross personal boundaries simply to satisfy curiosity.
This is simply one Tintin fan asking questions, turning over a few rocks, and seeing if there is still one more adventure left to uncover.
Disclaimer This article was written using publicly available information regarding Colin O’Meara at the time of writing. The purpose of this piece is not to pry into anyone’s private life or violate personal boundaries, but simply to discuss the curiosity many fans still have surrounding an actor who helped define an iconic character for an entire generation. The theories and questions presented throughout this article are speculative and intended for discussion purposes only. If Colin O’Meara has intentionally chosen to remain private, that choice deserves complete respect. All images used in this article fall under fair use for commentary and discussion purposes.
