There was a time on Medium when the doors felt heavy.
If you were a new writer, or if your English wasn’t "perfect," or if your topics didn’t fit into the narrow boxes of the big, exclusive publications, you were often left standing outside. You had the passion. You had the stories. But you didn’t have a home.
That was the reality for thousands of creators. Until one night, the lights turned on.
The Vision of Diversity
The birth of Illumination during the pandemic wasn’t just about creating another publication. It was about solving a real-life problem.
@ Dr Mehmet Yildiz
The founder and chief editor saw something that many others missed. He saw that strict niche requirements were killing creativity. While other publications demanded you stay in your lane, writing only about tech, or only about self-help, Illumination was born from a radical idea: Synergy.
The idea was that a poem about heartbreak could live next to a technical article about Artificial Intelligence. The belief was that "diversity" creates "serendipity," that happy accident where a reader looking for coding tips stumbles upon a life-changing philosophy essay.
Breaking the Walled Garden
When Illumination was born, it broke the rules of the "Walled Garden."
Most publications at the time acted like gatekeepers. They filtered people out. Illumination decided to filter people in.
It wasn’t about lowering standards; it was about broadening horizons. The goal was to give every writer from the Ph.D. holder to the student writing their first blog post a chance to be read. It created a level playing field where the only thing that mattered was the willingness to write and engage.
Why It Matters Today
Today, looking back at the history of this publication, we see more than just a collection of articles. We see a community.
The night Illumination was born, the algorithm of Medium changed forever, not because of code, but because of culture. It proved that writers support writers. It proved that if you open the doors wide enough, talent will walk in from places you never expected.
For those of us writing today, whether we are founding our own small publications or simply trying to get our first 100 views, we owe a nod to that origin story.
It reminds us that writing is not a solitary act. It is a collective movement. And sometimes, all it takes is one spark to illuminate the whole room.
