Maya sat across from me in Guelph last winter and said the sentence I have heard more times than I can count.
“I know exactly where this comes from.”
She did. That was the frustrating part.
She knew the childhood scene. The attachment pattern. The belief. The trigger. She could name the exact tone in her partner’s voice that set it off. She could feel the cold drop in her stomach before the conversation even got going.
She had read more than most therapists.
And her body still went cold every time her partner raised his voice.
That is the problem at the centre of a lot of trauma work.
Insight arrives. The body still reacts.
Not because the person failed. Not because they resisted. Not because they need to understand it one more time.
Because knowing where a pattern came from and changing the pattern are two different jobs. They are handled by two different systems.
Why insight does not stop the body
You know how it starts. The chest tightens. Something drops through the stomach. The shoulders climb. The jaw sets. The breath goes shallow and high in the chest.
By the time you notice it, the thing has already taken you.
A voice changes tone. A door closes a certain way. A few words land flat. And there it is. The same body. The same meaning. The same reaction.
You can point to the childhood scene. You can name the room, the sentence, the pattern. You can say, “This is why I react this way.”
And that knowledge may be absolutely true.
It still may not change the reaction.
That is not weakness. That is not poor coping. That is not a failure to do the work.
It means the reaction is not being run by the part of you that explains things.
The nervous system is not reading your insight.
It is reading the sequence.
The reaction is a sequence, not a story
Donald Hebb described the machinery in 1949. The short version of his work is the line almost everybody knows now: cells that fire together wire together.
That is not a metaphor.
When a cue, an image, a body state, and a meaning fire together under enough charge, the nervous system learns the path. Once the path is learned, it can run on its own.
The voice shifts. The body goes cold. The meaning arrives. The behaviour follows.
Later, when you are calmer, the intelligent part of you says, “I know exactly where this comes from.”
Yes. You do.
But insight is a new fact laid on top of an old sequence. It does not automatically unbuild the sequence underneath.
In NLP, we call these internal sequences strategies. A strategy is the order a person’s nervous system runs to produce a result. In trauma responses, the order often looks something like this:
- Cue: a voice, a look, a phrase, a sound, a smell, a silence.
- Inner representation: an image, sound, or felt sense flashes inside.
- Body state: the chest tightens, the stomach drops, the breath changes.
- Meaning: the nervous system decides what this moment means.
- Behaviour: defend, freeze, explain, withdraw, please, attack, collapse.
- Reinforcement: the loop proves itself by producing the same result again.
That order matters.
If the cue has already fired, and the body state has already arrived, then willpower is very late to the meeting. It is trying to change the last frame of a film that has already played.
That is why people get so frustrated. They are working hard. They are aware. They can explain the origin with absolute precision.
And the sequence still runs.
Not because they are broken.
Because the strategy is working perfectly. Exactly as it learned to.
Memory reconsolidation is the brain’s edit window
For most of the last century, people were taught to think of emotional memory as something close to permanent.
Once it set, it set.
You could manage it. Understand it. Cope with it. Build skills around it.
But the memory itself was treated as fixed.
That assumption broke in 2000.
Karim Nader and Joseph LeDoux showed that when a consolidated fear memory is reactivated, it becomes temporarily unstable again. Soft, if you like that word. Open. Labile.
I love that word.
Labile means it can move.
The memory has to be re-stored. And while it is in that open state, it can be updated.
That is the doorway.
Bruce Ecker and his colleagues later brought that science into clinical change work. If the old emotional learning can be reopened, then the work is not to argue with it. The work is to update it.
That is a very different job.
You are not trying to convince the person that they are safe while their body is proving the opposite. You are opening the sequence and changing what the nervous system stores.
How AMR changes the sequence
Affective Memory Resolution works at that level.
Not at the story level. Not at the “tell me everything that happened” level. At the encoded sequence level.
The old pattern is activated carefully. The nervous system opens the file. Visual-Spatial Tasking occupies working memory while the file is open, so the old emotional charge cannot re-lock in the same shape.
The memory stays. The charge changes.
I want to say that again.
The memory stays. The charge changes.
This is not erasing the past. This is not pretending it did not happen. The event remains part of the person’s history. But the sequence that kept turning that history into a current body response no longer runs the same way.
That is resolution.
Bessel van der Kolk gave the culture an important sentence: the body keeps the score.
Good.
Now what?
The score is the symptom. The sequence writing the score is the thing that changes.
Regulation helps. Resolution changes the pattern.
I am not against regulation.
Breathwork can help. Grounding can help. Orienting can help. Movement can help.
Regulation matters while the old sequence is still firing. But regulation is not the same as resolution.
Regulation helps you handle the reaction once it starts.
Resolution changes the reason it fires.
If Maya’s partner raised his voice and her body went cold, she could regulate. She could breathe. She could remind herself, “This is not my childhood.”
All useful.
But the next time his voice rose, the same sequence would still be waiting.
After the sequence changed, something different happened. Her partner still raises his voice sometimes. He is human. But her body no longer drops into the old cold state.
The cue is still there.
The sequence that used to interpret the cue as danger is not.
That is the difference.
“I know, but my body doesn’t”
There is a sentence people say when the work has reached its limit at the insight level.
“I know, but my body doesn’t.”
Listen to that sentence. It is not confusion. It is diagnosis.
The conscious mind knows. The body is still running an old encoding. The intervention belongs where the body is running the pattern.
More explanation is not the missing ingredient. A better reframe is not the missing ingredient.
The issue is sequence.
Work the sequence.
Not the story about the sequence.
